Monofacial vs bifacial solar photovoltaic systems in snowy environments

Koami Soulemane Hayibo et al.

Summary: There has been a recent interest in accurately estimating snow losses for solar photovoltaic systems in northern latitudes. This study compares the snow losses of monofacial and bifacial systems using empirical data and image processing methods. The results show that bifacial systems perform better in clearing snow and have lower snow losses compared to monofacial systems, especially in severe winter conditions.

Comparative analysis of monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic modules for floating power plants

Giuseppe Marco Tina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop usable commercial simulation software tools for photovoltaic systems, including floating applications. The study optimized thermal models for mono- and bifacial floating systems, compared ground and floating system data, and analyzed the impact of variables such as tilt angle, pitch, and module elevation. The research compared monofacial and bifacial models, considering sensitive factors like albedo, and used performance indices to evaluate the different solutions.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant advantage of bifacial photovoltaic technology in adapting to various weather conditions, especially under low irradiance. By comparing the performance of bifacial and monofacial photovoltaic modules, higher power output can be achieved. Furthermore, selecting appropriate installation locations, tilt angles, and tracking technologies can further enhance the power output of bifacial photovoltaic modules.

Simplified Approach to Adjust IEC-60891 Equation Coefficients From Experimental Measurements With Long-Term Validation

Caio Felippe Abe et al.

Summary: Modeling photovoltaic modules using the single-diode model provides a balance between complexity and accuracy, but requires calculating current-voltage characteristics for each operating condition change. The IEC-60891 standard offers a more straightforward application by providing translation procedures between different operating conditions if specific parameters are known. An alternative method to compute these parameters of IEC-60891, with reduced measurements as references, has been proposed and validated with experimental data, demonstrating mean absolute error and root-mean-square error below 3% for two different photovoltaic modules.

Energy yield measurement of an elevated PV system on a white flat roof and a performance comparison of monofacial and bifacial modules

W. Muehleisen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that installing bifacial solar panels on a flat rooftop of industrial buildings can effectively increase yield, but changes in albedo due to soiling and moss growth make it difficult to accurately calculate power output. Experimentally, optimizing the layout of solar panels and selecting panels with higher bifaciality can increase yield.
