Controls on sediment storage in wide mountain valleys - a case study from Srinagar (Garhwal) valley, NW Himalaya

Rahul Devrani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the valley-fill deposits in the Srinagar valley of the northwest Himalaya and reveals that the width of the valley is controlled structurally. The research demonstrates that the long-term interaction of the river with tributaries and hillslope processes can be masked by younger sediments if not thoroughly investigated.

Assessing Sediment Pulse during an Extreme Hydrological Event in the Alaknanda Basin, Northwestern Himalaya, India

Rahul Devrani et al.

Summary: In 2013, an extreme hydrological event in the Northwestern Himalaya caused high sediment mobilisation in the upper Ganga Basin, impacting human populations, infrastructure, and ecology in the Kedarnath and Srinagar valleys. Due to limited monitoring stations and data, understanding of sediment movement mechanisms in the Himalayan river basins remains poor, highlighting the need for detailed studies during extreme events.

Spatio-temporal climatic variations during the last five millennia in the Ladakh Himalaya (India) and its links to archaeological finding(s) (including coprolites) in a palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental context: A reappraisal

Binita Phartiyal et al.

Summary: The Ladakh region, located at the meeting point of Central Asia and South Asia, has experienced four broad climatic phases over the past five millennia, including cold and arid, moderately cold and arid, warm and wet, and cold and arid periods. The region also holds potential for discovering coprolites, faunal remains, and other archaeological features dating back to the Holocene interval, providing valuable insights into the dietary patterns and ecology changes in response to the climate variations in Ladakh.

Legends of the Ardennes Massif, a Cross-Border Intangible Geo-cultural Heritage (Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Germany)

Eric Goemaere et al.

Summary: Myths and legends related to geological phenomena or stunning landscapes in the Ardennes Massif represent an important intangible geo-cultural heritage, adding an extra dimension to the holistic experience of geoheritage. Legends about characters like Emperor Charlemagne and Saint Remacle, as well as mythical figures like the Four Sons of Aymon, are rooted in the local geology and have even given their names to official geological formations. Other folktales involving creatures like dwarfs and witches have indirect links with geological curiosities, presenting a rich potential for geotourism development.
