Development of transgenic composite Stylosanthes plants to study root growth regulated by a β-expansin gene, SgEXPB1, under phosphorus deficiency

Linjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully established an efficient Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation method for generating transgenic composite plants of 'S. guianensis' stylo. The results showed that composite stylo plants with transgenic hairy roots were efficiently generated with a transformation efficiency of over 95%. Subsequently, the SgEXPB1 gene, which is up-regulated by phosphorus deficiency, was successfully overexpressed in hairy roots, leading to increased root growth and phosphorus concentration in the transgenic composite plants under low phosphorus treatment. This study provides valuable insights into the function of the SgEXPB1 gene in stylo root growth.

The rice phosphate transporter OsPHT1;7 plays a dual role in phosphorus redistribution and anther development

Changrong Dai et al.

Summary: A rice phosphate transporter, OsPHT1;7, plays a crucial role in the transport and recycling of phosphate within rice plants, stimulating both vegetative and reproductive growth. OsPHT1;7 is preferentially expressed in source leaves and nodes and is responsible for distributing phosphate from old leaves to young leaves and anthers. Mutation of OsPHT1;7 impairs phosphate accumulation in anthers, leading to inhibited pollen germination and decreased seed-setting rate and grain yield.

MEDIATOR16 orchestrates local and systemic responses to phosphate scarcity in Arabidopsis roots

Summary: This study assessed the role of the MED16 subunit in Arabidopsis root system remodeling in response to phosphate limitation, showing that it modulates the expression of a large set of low-phosphate-induced genes to increase phosphate absorption in roots. The findings suggest that MED16 is critical for the transcriptional activation of STOP1 targets, including the membrane permease ALMT1, in order to enhance malate exudation in response to low phosphate, shedding light on how plant cells orchestrate root morphogenesis to gene expression with the STOP1-ALMT1 module.

Mechanisms and Adaptation Strategies of Tolerance to Phosphorus Deficiency in Legumes

Mohamed Lazali et al.

Summary: Legumes are well-known for their nutritional benefits and ability to form symbiosis with N-2-fixing microorganisms, but their N-2 fixation process has a high energy cost and is strongly impacted by phosphorus deficiency, particularly in tropical regions. Legumes have evolved strategies to adapt to phosphorus deficiency at both morphological and physiological levels, with maintaining symbiotic N-2 fixation being crucial for their productivity in low-phosphorus environments. Research on physiological and molecular adaptations of legumes under phosphorus deficiency is necessary to develop elite cultivars capable of thriving in such conditions.

Medicago SPX1 and SPX3 regulate phosphate homeostasis, mycorrhizal colonization, and arbuscule degradation

However, how plants sense the amount of phosphate obtained from the fungus and how this affects the lifespan of arbuscules remains poorly understood. Medicago truncatula SPX-domain containing proteins SPX1 and SPX3 are shown to play important roles as phosphate sensors in regulating root phosphate starvation responses, fungal colonization, and arbuscule degradation in maintaining a beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.
