PePYL4 enhances drought tolerance by modulating water-use efficiency and ROS scavenging in Populus

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study identified PePYL4 as a potential gene target for regulating water use efficiency and drought tolerance in Populus. Overexpression of PePYL4 increased ABA sensitivity, reduced stomatal aperture, and improved water use efficiency in transgenic white poplars. These transgenic plants also showed higher photosynthetic activity and biomass accumulation under drought stress. PePYL4 overexpression enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity and ascorbate content, leading to improved scavenging of reactive oxygen species. Upregulation of stress-related genes also contributed to the enhanced drought tolerance of transgenic plants.

No stress memory pattern was detected in sugar maple and white spruce seedlings subjected to experimental droughts

Zoe Ribeyre et al.

Summary: The increase in drought events threatens forests and the services they provide. Trees accumulating lesions from successive stresses can lead to decreased vigor and death. Nonlethal stress may initiate a stress memory, triggering a stronger defensive response. While well understood in herbaceous plants, this mechanism needs further understanding in trees. This study aims to explore stress memory development in two forest tree species.

RNA-Seq reveals different responses to drought in Neotropical trees from savannas and seasonally dry forests

Mariane B. Sobreiro et al.

Summary: Water availability is crucial for plant growth and crop productivity, and plants can rapidly adjust their metabolism by altering gene expression in response to drought stress. This study analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEG) in four phylogenetically related neotropical Bignoniaceae tree species under drought stress, revealing that savanna species may be less responsive to drought at the transcriptional level due to morphological and anatomical adaptations, while the species with the widest ecological niche exhibited the highest number of DEG and up- and down-regulated transcription factors.
