Mainstreaming orphan millets for advancing climate smart agriculture to secure nutrition and health

Piyoosh K. Babele et al.

Summary: The ever-changing climate and the current COVID-19 pandemic have a severe impact on agriculture production and the livelihoods of the poor and malnourished population. Orphan millets, despite their unique potential, are facing decline in cultivation in many countries. Efforts are needed to advance research and development, implement technological intervention strategies, and establish favorable policies to ensure food and nutrition security for the vulnerable population.

RNA-Seq reveals different responses to drought in Neotropical trees from savannas and seasonally dry forests

Mariane B. Sobreiro et al.

Summary: Water availability is crucial for plant growth and crop productivity, and plants can rapidly adjust their metabolism by altering gene expression in response to drought stress. This study analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEG) in four phylogenetically related neotropical Bignoniaceae tree species under drought stress, revealing that savanna species may be less responsive to drought at the transcriptional level due to morphological and anatomical adaptations, while the species with the widest ecological niche exhibited the highest number of DEG and up- and down-regulated transcription factors.

Genic microsatellite marker characterization and development in little millet (Panicum sumatrense) using transcriptome sequencing

Hiral Desai et al.

Summary: Little millet is a climate-resilient and high-nutrient value plant. Through sequencing the transcriptome of three samples, this study identified 4443 SSR loci in the millet genome, which can be a valuable resource for future research in breeding, genetic resource conservation, and QTL-based studies.

Variability and trait-specific accessions for grain yield and nutritional traits in germplasm of little millet (Panicum sumatrense Roth. Ex. Roem. & Schult.)

Mani Vetriventhan et al.

Summary: Little millet, native to India, is a highly nutritious grain that can grow well in marginal lands and withstand drought and waterlogging conditions. Research shows significant variability in agronomic and grain nutrient traits of little millet landraces, with some accessions displaying promising characteristics. Further evaluation of these accessions under different conditions could lead to the identification of valuable varieties for cultivation or improvement of little millet.

Serotonin and Melatonin Biosynthesis in Plants: Genome-Wide Identification of the Genes and Their Expression Reveal a Conserved Role in Stress and Development

Bidisha Bhowal et al.

Summary: Serotonin and melatonin are master regulators of plant growth and development, and their biosynthesis genes show distinct evolutionary relationships among different plant species. The expression of these genes is influenced by tissue-specific, developmental, and stress/hormone-mediated variations, with light/dark cycles also affecting their expression. MiRNAs regulate the expression of genes involved in serotonin and melatonin biosynthesis under light and stress conditions, providing opportunities for functional characterization of target genes in plant physiology.
