Effects of surface charge and chemical forms of manganese(II) on rice roots on manganese absorption by different rice varieties

Hai-long Lu et al.

Summary: The roots of indica and hybrid rice varieties exhibited more negative charges compared to japonica rice, resulting in higher levels of exchangeable Mn(II) adsorption. However, the absorption of Mn(II) in the shoots after 48 hours showed different trends. The coexisting cations of K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ reduced the exchangeable Mn(II) on rice roots, leading to decreased Mn(II) absorption in both roots and shoots, with Ca2+ and Mg2+ showing a greater impact than K+ and Na+.

Application of measuring electrochemical characteristics on plant root surfaces in screening Al-tolerant wheat

Ge Dong et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between Al phytotoxicity and the electrochemical characteristics of wheat root surfaces by proposing a new chemical mechanism for wheat tolerance to Al toxicity. Through various experiments and analysis, different wheat cultivars were classified based on their Al tolerance levels. Results show that wheat roots with less negative charges are more tolerant to Al toxicity, and the pot experiment confirms that Al-tolerant wheat cultivars generally have greater relative dry weight and lower Al accumulation in their shoots. The findings offer insights into screening Al-tolerant wheat cultivars, explaining the tolerance mechanism, predicting Al uptake differences between cultivars, and ultimately addressing food security risks from Al in acid soils.

The significance of ion-exchange properties of plant root cell walls for nutrient and water uptake by plants

Nataly Meychik et al.

Summary: Ion exchange and diffusion in plant root cell walls play key roles in the uptake of mineral nutrients and water, which are influenced by plant age, growth conditions, pH, and ionic strength of the external solution. Understanding the physico-chemical properties of plant cell walls is crucial for comprehending the complex processes of water and nutrient uptake.
