Salt Stress in Brassica: Effects, Tolerance Mechanisms, and Management

Babar Shahzad et al.

Summary: The Brassica species are negatively affected by salt stress, which disrupts their growth and development. However, they exhibit tolerance mechanisms such as organic and inorganic osmolyte accumulation and efficient ion exclusion, with recent studies highlighting the role of ROS in enhancing salt stress tolerance.

Seed Priming with Devosia sp. Cell-Free Supernatant (CFS) and Citrus Bioflavonoids Enhance Canola and Soybean Seed Germination

Ateeq Shah et al.

Summary: Climate change and environmental pollution have significant impacts on agricultural production. Salt stress is a major threat to plant growth, especially during early stages. Seed priming with ecofriendly substances, such as flavonoids and cell-free supernatant (CFS), can improve seed tolerance against salt stress. In this study, flavonoids and a novel strain of Devosia sp. CFS were tested as sustainable approaches to enhance canola and soybean seed germination under salt stress and optimal growth conditions. Both biostimulants showed promising effects, with significant improvements in seed germination under salt stress. However, their combination did not yield better results than individual applications. Flavonoids and Devosia sp. CFS could be effective plant growth enhancers, surpassing other biostimulants and bacterial-based compounds currently in use.

Nitrogen application alleviates salt stress by enhancing osmotic balance, ROS scavenging, and photosynthesis of rapeseed seedlings (Brassica napus)

Tian Tian et al.

Summary: This study conducted a pot experiment to investigate the effects of different nitrogen application rates on the growth parameters and physiological processes of rapeseed seedlings under salt stress. The results revealed that appropriate nitrogen application could alleviate salt-induced inhibition, improve antioxidant enzyme activities and non-enzymatic substances content, and promote photosynthesis. This study contributes to our understanding of the mechanism by which nitrogen application alleviates salt stress in crops.

Summary: High salt concentrations in the growth medium can hinder plant growth and development. Understanding the different components of the salt-tolerant network in plants is crucial for breeding salt-tolerant cultivars. In addition to regulating ion homeostasis, other salt tolerance mechanisms in plants include osmoregulation, cell wall remodeling, and antioxidative defense.

Gibberellic acid and nitrogen efficiently protect early seedlings growth stage from salt stress damage in Sorghum

Adam Yousif Adam Ali et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated that GA(3) and nitrogen fertilizer could effectively mitigate the negative impacts of salinity on crop growth, especially in protecting early seedlings. Interaction between nitrogen and salinity had significant effects on various parameters, while the interaction between GA(3) and salinity significantly affected seedling attributes. Overall, the application of 144.3 and 288.7 mu M GA(3) and 90 and 135 kg N ha(-1) was most effective in alleviating salinity damage.
