Proline, a multifaceted signalling molecule in plant responses to abiotic stress: understanding the physiological mechanisms

U. K. Ghosh et al.

Summary: Proline plays a crucial role in plant response to abiotic stresses, acting as a molecular chaperone, antioxidative defence molecule, osmoprotectant, and signaling molecule. Overproduction of proline in plants helps maintain cellular homeostasis and improve adaptive responses to changing climate conditions.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily in sorghum: genome-wide identification, evolution, and transcript profiling during development stages and stress conditions

Md Sifatul Islam et al.

Summary: This study identified 19 ALDH genes in Sorghum bicolor and found that they clustered with monocot rice and maize in the phylogenetic tree. Expression analysis revealed that several SbALDH genes were expressed in various tissues, developmental stages, and in response to abiotic stresses, with the majority of the genes showing high responsiveness to drought stress. The presence of cis-acting elements in the promoter region of these genes might play a significant role in drought tolerance.

The oxidative stress caused by atrazine in root exudation of Pennisetum americanum (L.) K. Schum

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Pearl millet is a potential remediation plant for atrazine pollution, and exposure to atrazine can lead to changes in the composition of root exudates in plants, indicating oxidative stress response.

Multi-omics network-based functional annotation of unknown Arabidopsis genes

Thomas Depuydt et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel automated function prediction method that leverages complementary information from gene co-expression networks to successfully predict biological process annotations for Arabidopsis thaliana genes. Using experimental data validation, high-confidence functional annotations were obtained for unknown genes and genes with computational annotations, shedding light on a variety of developmental processes and molecular responses in Arabidopsis.

Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 3 Is an Expanded Gene Family with Potential Adaptive Roles in Chickpea

Rocio Carmona-Molero et al.

Summary: Studies have shown the potential of aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) in improving plant adaptation in chickpeas, particularly in stress responses. Most chickpea ALDHs originate from gene duplication events, with the ALDH3 gene family noticeably expanded. Segmental duplication is suggested as a major driving force in the expansion of the ALDH family based on physical gene locations and sequence similarities.

An angiosperm NLR Atlas reveals that NLR gene reduction is associated with ecological specialization and signal transduction component deletion

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: By establishing an angiosperm NLR atlas with over 300 angiosperm genomes, this study revealed significant differences in NLR gene copy numbers, which are associated with ecological adaptation and genome content variation. NLR contraction was linked to adaptations to aquatic, parasitic, and carnivorous lifestyles, with a similar pattern observed in aquatic plants resembling the lack of NLR expansion in green algae before colonization of land.

Proteomic analysis reveals the protective role of exogenous hydrogen sulfide against salt stress in rice seedlings

Ming-Yue Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrogen sulfide plays a protective role in salt tolerance by mitigating oxidative stress, recovering photosynthetic capacity, improving primary and energy metabolism, strengthening protein metabolism, and consolidating cell structure in rice seedlings under salt stress conditions. Proteomic analysis demonstrated that NaHS regulates antioxidant-related proteins abundances and affected related enzyme activities under salt stress. Protein-protein interaction analysis further unraveled a complicated regulation network among biological processes affecting the tolerance of rice seedlings to salt stress under H2S treatment.
