Rhizosphere engineering for sustainable crop production: entropy-based insights

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: There is a lack of understanding about the dynamic rhizosphere processes based on entropy in exploring interactions at the root-soil interface in natural and agricultural ecosystems. A new conceptual model of rhizosphere regulation using thermodynamic entropy has been developed. This model highlights the importance of self-organization, minimized entropy, and improved information exchange for optimized nutrient acquisition and plant-soil system processes. Manipulating rhizosphere dynamics and minimizing entropy through localized nutrient supply can improve nutrient-use efficiency and support sustainable food/feed/fiber production.

Plant-microbiome interactions under a changing world: responses, consequences and perspectives

Pankaj Trivedi et al.

Summary: Climate change affects plant-microbiome interactions and ecological functions in various scales. Short-term plant adaptation to climate change relies on the plant microbiome, while long-term adaptation is equally driven by eco-evolutionary interactions between the plant microbiome and its host. Understanding these dynamics can inform predictions of climate change impacts on primary productivity and help in developing management strategies for plant systems.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Conferring Tolerance to Biotic Stresses in Plants

Bhaskar Dowarah et al.

Summary: Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between plant roots and fungi, with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) being the most prominent type. AMF rely on host plants for photosynthates and provide benefits in return. They help improve host plants' tolerance against various biotic stresses through mechanisms like nutrient competition and rhizosphere alteration. The effectiveness of AM associations in conferring biotic stress tolerance is influenced by various biotic and abiotic factors.

Plant root exudates and rhizosphere bacterial communities shift with neighbor context

Tayler C. Ulbrich et al.

Summary: The presence of neighboring plants can alter the root exudates and rhizosphere community of a focal plant, and the most competitive neighbor has the largest impact. Neighbor-induced changes in root exudates and microbial spillover from larger neighbors contribute to shifts in rhizosphere assembly. These changes in exudates can have greater effects on soil nutrients than on microbial assembly. This study emphasizes the importance of considering neighborhood context in microbiome studies.

Molecular mechanisms underlying multi-level defense responses of horticultural crops to fungal pathogens

Xiaodi Xu et al.

Summary: The horticultural industry plays a significant role in improving human diet and agricultural economy. However, fungal diseases pose a major challenge, causing economic losses and food waste. Understanding horticultural plant defense responses and fungal pathogenicity is crucial for developing regulatory strategies to enhance plant resistance. Recent advancements in multi-omics analyses, gene editing, sequencing, and data mining have contributed to the identification and functional determination of defense molecules and their signaling pathways. This review summarizes the research progress on defense responses of horticultural crops to fungal pathogens and discusses novel regulatory strategies, as well as future research directions.

Summary: Through experiments and analysis, a mucilage-degrading microorganism Phanerochaete chrysosporium was identified in the rhizosphere of the halophyte Artemisia sphaerocephala, with the highest abundance observed in May. Subnetworks indicated positive interactions between the mucilage-degrading fungus and its closely related fungi and bacteria, potentially enhancing mucilage degradation. Additionally, the mucilage-degrading microorganism may regulate root C and N by influencing the structure of rhizosphere microbial communities.

Summary: Beneficial microbial communities in the rhizosphere play a crucial role in plant-pathogen interactions by acting as a barrier to pathogen invasion and inducing plant systemic resistance. Plants can manipulate and recruit beneficial microbes, shaping their rhizosphere microorganisms in response to pathogen invasion. This reciprocal symbiosis between plants and beneficial microbes helps increase plant growth and productivity while avoiding excessive immune responses.

Summary: Plant-associated microbiomes play a crucial role in assisting their host plants in various activities, such as nutrition and defense. Research has shown that exposure to stressors like herbivory can cause shifts in the composition of plant-associated microbiomes. However, while different herbivores can affect microbial diversity and structure in the rhizosphere, the identity of the herbivore does not impact the overall diversity or community structure of bacteria thriving in the rhizosphere.
