Identification of QTL for reducing loss of grain yield under salt stress conditions in bi-parental populations derived from wheat landrace Hongmangmai

Xiang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new QTL (QSt.nftec-2BL) was mapped to a 0.7 cM interval on chromosome 2B. Plants with QSt.nftec-2BL had higher grain yields by up to 21.4% in salinized fields. The wheat landrace Hongmangmai (HMM) showed higher salt tolerance than other tested varieties, and QTL mapping was conducted to understand the genetic basis of this tolerance.

Genomic analysis, trajectory tracking, and field surveys reveal sources and long-distance dispersal routes of wheat stripe rust pathogen in China

Yuxiang Li et al.

Summary: Through genomic analysis, we identified Longnan, the Himalayan region, and the Guizhou Plateau as the main sources of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) in China, with each region contributing to different parts of the country. These findings enhance our understanding of the wheat stripe rust epidemics in China and highlight the importance of national-level management strategies.

Mining the Vavilov wheat diversity panel for new sources of adult plant resistance to stripe rust

Dilani T. Jambuthenne et al.

Summary: A multi-year evaluation of the Vavilov wheat diversity panel identified new sources of adult plant resistance to stripe rust. Genome-wide association studies revealed key genomic regions influencing resistance, including seven novel loci. These findings are important for broadening the genetic bases of YR resistance in modern wheat varieties.

Discovery of stripe rust resistance with incomplete dominance in wild emmer wheat using bulked segregant analysis sequencing

Valentyna Klymiuk et al.

Summary: Durable crop disease resistance is crucial for global food security. In this study, a highly resistant allele Yr84 was identified in wild emmer wheat using a BSA-Seq approach. The precise location of Yr84 was determined and genetic markers closely linked to Yr84 were developed, facilitating marker-assisted selection for rust resistance breeding.

Meta-QTLs and candidate genes for stripe rust resistance in wheat

Irfat Jan et al.

Summary: Meta-QTL analysis was performed using 353 QTLs in bread wheat, resulting in identification of 61 MQTLs carrying 37 Yr genes and 385 candidate genes. Among these candidate genes, 241 encoded known R proteins, with 120 showing differential expression in response to stripe rust infection.

An adult plant stripe rust resistance gene maps on chromosome 7A of Australian wheat cultivar Axe

Mehwish Kanwal et al.

Summary: The study successfully located the adult plant stripe rust resistance gene Yr75 and identified markers closely linked with this gene through fine mapping. Using the Axe wheat cultivar and its progeny population in experiments, the genetic characteristics of Yr75 under greenhouse conditions were confirmed, and resistance-related SNPs were analyzed through molecular marker analysis. By high-resolution sequencing analysis, the chromosomal region where Yr75 is located was effectively flanked.

NLR immune receptors and diverse types of non-NLR proteins control race-specific resistance in Triticeae

Javier Sanchez-Martin et al.

Summary: Recent advances in sequencing and genomics have accelerated the identification of race-specific resistance (R) genes and their corresponding avirulence (Avr) genes in wheat, barley, rye, and their wild relatives. The diversity of proteins encoded by these genes suggests that polyploid cereal genomes have the potential to generate a variety of resistance genes.

Importance of Landraces in Cereal Breeding for Stress Tolerance

Daniela Marone et al.

Summary: The renewed focus on cereal landraces is a response to the reduction of genetic diversity caused by modern agriculture and conventional breeding. These landraces are still cultivated on marginal lands and play an important role in modern plant breeding. On-farm and ex situ conservation in gene bank collections, together with data sharing, greatly benefit cereal improvement.
