Peng Zhan et al.

Summary: This study integrated habitat and quality assessment of Panax notoginseng for its potential distribution in China under climate change conditions. Results showed that suitable habitats were mainly distributed in central and eastern Yunnan Province, but were predicted to decrease and move to high-altitude areas in the future. The saponin content in highly suitable habitats was relatively low, with temperature and precipitation playing key roles in the distribution of P. notoginseng.

Genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying root architecture and function under heat stress-A hidden story

Manish Tiwari et al.

Summary: Heat stress has a significant negative impact on global food production, but limited research has been done on root responses to this stress. The review discusses the physiological, morphological, and molecular responses of roots to heat stress, including the interaction between genes, phytohormones, reactive oxygen species, and antioxidants. The regulation and transport of phytohormones, as well as epigenetic modifications, play important roles in root growth under heat stress. Furthermore, exogenous application of chemical compounds or biological agents can alleviate the reduction in root biomass caused by heat stress. Future research should focus on understanding the systemic effect of heat stress from shoot to root and unraveling the molecular cues underlying root architecture and function.

Characterization of the mitochondrial genome of Cucumis hystrix and comparison with other cucurbit crops

Lei Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, we assembled the mitochondrial genome of Cucumis hystrix and compared it with other crops in the Cucurbitaceae family. Our findings revealed that C. hystrix is closer to C. sativus and demonstrated the paternal inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in C. hystrix. These results provide a tool to clarify the paternal lineage within the evolution of Cucumis.

Fragaria mitogenomes evolve rapidly in structure but slowly in sequence and incur frequent multinucleotide mutations mediated by microinversions

Weishu Fan et al.

Summary: Plant mitochondrial DNA evolves rapidly in structure but slowly in sequence. The noncoding portions of plant mitogenomes are not homologous among species, which raises questions about the rate and spectrum of mutations in noncoding regions. The study shows that plant mitogenomes have low point mutations genome-wide but exceptionally high structural variations, supporting a gain-and-loss model for the rapid loss of homology among plant mitogenomes.
