Influence of ionic cerium and cerium oxide nanoparticles on Zea mays seedlings grown with and without cadmium

Muhammad Ashar Ayub et al.

Summary: The effects of cerium (Ce4+) and cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) on maize plants were studied, and the role of Ce source (ionic or bulk) and nanoparticle size in maize was investigated. It was found that Ce4+ resulted in decreased seedling growth and biomass, and increased uptake of heavy metals and Cd in maize. The effects of CeO2-NPs depended on particle size, with CeO2-50 nm showing beneficial effects on maize seedling growth parameters in the presence of Cd.

Influence of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles on Two Terrestrial Wild Plant Species

Daniel Lizzi et al.

Summary: Current studies have primarily focused on the impact of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) on food crops, neglecting the effects on wild plants, which could have dire consequences on food webs and ecosystem services. A pot trial conducted in greenhouse conditions revealed that plants uptake and translocate cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO(2) in different ways, leading to varied responses among plant species to the treatments. The experiment also showed stimulating effects on plant growth, but with observed nutritional imbalances for macro and micronutrients.

Exposure of cerium oxide nanoparticles to the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii decreases the uptake of cadmium via the apoplastic pathway

Yuankun Liu et al.

Summary: CeO2NPs can decrease the concentration of cadmium in the roots and shoots of Sedum alfredii by up to 37%, mainly through the apoplastic pathway. Additionally, CeO2NPs can accelerate the development of Casparian strips and suberin, affecting the uptake and translocation of both Ce and Cd in the roots.
