Crop phenotyping in a context of global change: What to measure and how to do it

Remote sensing methods, combined with data processing and machine learning techniques, have widespread applications in phenotyping. This review also discusses the development of other lab-based tools and root phenotyping, as well as the use of aerial platforms and data processing technologies.

Will temperature and rainfall changes prevent yield progress in Europe?

Summary: This study reveals that there has been positive progress in the yields of wheat, barley, rice, and maize in Europe in recent years. However, certain regions in Western Europe, Southern Europe, and Northern Europe have experienced stagnant yield progress. Temperature changes have shown some correlation with yield, but the relationship between rainfall and yield is not clear. In order to maximize the yields of wheat, barley, and maize in Europe, it is important to conduct thorough regional testing on genetic adaptation, increased crop cycle duration, drought tolerance, sowing dates, smart irrigation, and sustainable practices.

Sixty years of irrigated wheat yield increase in the Yaqui Valley of Mexico: Past drivers, prospects and sustainability

Summary: Continued global wheat yield increase is crucial for world food security. The average farm yield of irrigated spring wheat in the Yaqui Valley of Mexico has significantly increased from 1960 to 2019, largely due to the research and efforts of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre. Factors such as agronomic progress, breeding improvements, and government support have contributed to the increase in yield. It is expected that breeding progress will slow down in the future, while new agronomy practices have limited potential. Developing countries have the opportunity to close yield gaps and play a key role in global wheat food security.

Using NDVI for the assessment of canopy cover in agricultural crops within modelling research

Summary: The fraction of green canopy cover is commonly used to characterize crop growth and calibrate models. This study conducted a meta-analysis on the NDVI-CC relationships and proposed generic models for different agricultural crops. The study found that the correlations were adequate and the overall applicability of these relationships to modeling is promising.

Comparison of Genomic Prediction Methods for Yellow, Stem, and Leaf Rust Resistance in Wheat Landraces from Afghanistan

Summary: Genomic prediction technology shows promise in enhancing resistance to wheat rust diseases through selecting resistant plant genotypes and accumulating favorable alleles. Different models were compared for predictive ability, with no single model outperforming the rest for all traits. LASSO and EN models showed the lowest predictive ability in four out of five traits.
