Linking trait network to growth performance of submerged macrophytes in response to ammonium pulse

Guixiang Yuan et al.

Summary: Extreme precipitation events caused by climate change lead to large nitrogen input variations in aquatic ecosystems. Our study focused on the response of submerged macrophytes to different ammonium pulse patterns, showing that ammonium pulses enhance trait connectivity in the plant trait network (PTN) and have a profound and prolonged impact on plant performance. The highly connected traits in PTN are related to biomass allocation, while phenotype-related and energy storage-related traits are least connected. Our results contribute to the understanding of the impact of resource pulses on submerged macrophyte population dynamics in the context of global climate change.

Qingyang Rao et al.

Summary: Research has shown that under high water TP enrichment, the connectedness and functional potentials of plant trait networks decrease, which is correlated with reduced tissue carbohydrates. The study reveals the correlations between plant trait network topology and functions under high nutrient conditions.

Morphological responses of the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans along an underwater light gradient: A mesocosm experiment reveals the importance of the Secchi depth to water depth ratio

Changtao Yang et al.

Summary: The growth and clonal reproduction of submerged macrophytes decrease with decreasing BLA, with an intermediate SD/WD ratio providing optimal growth conditions. The resource allocation strategies and resilience of V. natans to decreasing underwater light conditions are reflected in an inverted U-shaped relationship between growth traits and a linear relationship between reproduction and stability.

How does turions production of Potamogeton crispus L. respond to parental population biomass and living environment

Tianshun Zhu et al.

Summary: This field research investigated the influence of parental population and environmental factors on the turions production of Potamogeton crispus L. It was found that P. crispus biomass and asexual turions had a uniform spatial distribution pattern, and were significantly related to water depth, light attenuation coefficient, sediment water content, sediment organic matter content, and pH. The weight of a single turion was determined by the biomass of P. crispus, while the number of turions was determined by both the biomass of P. crispus and sediment water content. Turion weight mainly depended on the number of turions rather than the weight of a single turion, and was influenced by maternal biomass and sediment water content.

Seed Size Variation of Trees and Lianas in a Tropical Forest of Southeast Asia: Allometry, Phylogeny, and Seed Trait-Plant Functional Trait Relationships

Pornwiwan Pothasin et al.

Summary: Seed size plays a key role in ecological processes within a plant community, with relationships to phylogenetic patterns and functional plant traits. A study conducted by a research team in Indonesia found significant differences in seed size between trees and lianas in a tropical rainforest, highlighting the importance of frugivore size as a driver of seed size variation.

Plant functional traits play the second fiddle to plant functional types in explaining peatland CO2 and CH4 gas exchange

Anna M. Laine et al.

Summary: Peatlands are significant soil carbon stores, but the C gas flux components show distinct spatial variation within and between peatlands. This study suggests that the spatial variability of these fluxes can be best explained by functional plant types and their traits, rather than individual traits. The results emphasize the importance of refining plant functional groupings based on relevant plant traits for future gas flux modeling purposes.

Response of plant functional traits to nitrogen enrichment under climate change: A meta-analysis

Xiaohui Guo et al.

Summary: Soil nitrogen supply plays a crucial role in plant performance, but its effects are influenced by complex climate changes. Nitrogen enrichment can enhance the size, nutrient content, and fitness of terrestrial plants. The interaction between nitrogen and climate variables on plant performance depends on the experimental setting and approach, leading to varying results.

Linking the network topology of plant traits with community structure, functioning, and adaptive strategies of submerged macrophytes

Lantian Wang et al.

Summary: Plant trait network analysis can reveal complex relationships among traits and their topology. This study found that water total phosphorus significantly influenced the topology of trait networks. Under low or high nutrient levels, the network structure was dispersed with lower connectivity and higher modularity, while moderate nutrient levels showed a different network structure. Network connectivity was positively correlated with community biomass and homeostasis, while network modularity was negatively correlated with community biomass and homeostasis.

Potamogeton crispusresponses to varying water depth in morphological plasticity and physiological traits

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: Submerged macrophytes are crucial primary producers in shallow lakes, and their growth is greatly influenced by water depth, especially in terms of morphological and physiological traits. This study found that as water depth increases, the plant height and leaf area ofPotamogeton crispusgradually increase until a certain depth, while stem diameter and leaf thickness decrease. Additionally, the ratio of chlorophyllatobdecreases with increasing water depth.

Intraspecific trait variation in plants: a renewed focus on its role in ecological processes

A. C. Westerband et al.

Summary: Plant intraspecific trait variation (ITV) plays a key role in determining individual and population performance, species interactions, community structure and assembly, and ecosystem properties, but its extent varies widely across species, traits, and environments. Systematically characterizing the sources of ITV will be crucial in identifying underlying mechanisms that shape ITV. Greater emphasis on reporting individual replicates and population means, as well as interdisciplinary research, is essential.

Plant functional traits reflect different dimensions of species invasiveness

Estibaliz Palma et al.

Summary: The study reveals that different ways of quantifying invasiveness are correlated with different functional traits, and some plant traits have opposite effects across invasion metrics. Species' invasiveness is associated with different demographic dimensions such as spread rate, local abundance, and geographic and environmental range sizes, and these dimensions are better explained by different sets of traits.

Consistent trait-environment relationships within and across tundra plant communities

Julia Kemppinen et al.

Summary: By utilizing data from plant community trait composition, microclimate, and soil chemistry from four distinct tundra regions, the authors demonstrate strong and consistent trait-environment relationships across Arctic and Antarctic regions. These relationships were found to be transferable between tundra plant communities even when accounting for fine-scale environmental heterogeneity, with local conditions heavily influencing both structural and leaf economic traits. This study enhances the biological and mechanistic basis for predicting the impact of climate change on vulnerable high-latitude ecosystems.

Unraveling the effect of inter-basin water transfer on reducing water scarcity and its inequality in China

Siao Sun et al.

Summary: This study conducted the first national assessment of the effect of inter-basin water transfer projects in China on securing water supply in different basins. The results indicated that while water transfer impacted the water supply of 43 out of 76 sub-basins, it had little impact on changing a basin's water scarcity level. Approximately half of China's population benefited from alleviated water scarcity due to water transfer, leading to a reduction in the inequality coefficient.
