Saline soils worldwide: Identifying the most promising areas for saline agriculture

Katarzyna Negacz et al.

Summary: Salinization poses a major challenge for agriculture, but it can be addressed through saline agriculture methods. This study aims to identify locations and surface area of saline soils and assess the potential for saline agricultural production. The results show that salt-affected soils cover a total area of 17 million km(2), with the largest potential lying in non-depleted water basins totaling 2 million km(2). Further socio-economic analysis is needed to determine priority countries for sustainable food production exploration.

Exogenously Applied Rohitukine Inhibits Photosynthetic Processes, Growth and Induces Antioxidant Defense System in Arabidopsis thaliana

Sajad Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological effect of rohitukine on Arabidopsis thaliana for the first time. The results showed that high concentrations of rohitukine had a significant negative impact on the growth and physiological mechanisms of Arabidopsis thaliana, including decreased leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight, disruption of photosynthesis and chlorophyll content, and induction of oxidative stress.

Effect of Salinity on Physiological and Biochemical Parameters of Leaves in Three Pomegranate (Punica Granatum L.) Cultivars

Olga Dichala et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the physiological and biochemical responses of three pomegranate varieties under different levels of salt stress. The results showed that Ermioni had the highest content of proline, phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity among all salts, while Grenada was the most susceptible to salt stress. Additionally, all cultivars showed a reduction in chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations.

Effects of NaCl and CaCl2 Salinization on Morpho-Anatomical and Physiological Traits of Potted Callistemon citrinus Plants

Veronica De Micco et al.

Summary: The study found that when Callistemon citrinus plants were irrigated with a CaCl2 solution, the leaf morpho-anatomical structure could not maintain high photosynthetic performance under high salt conditions compared to plants treated with an iso-osmotic NaCl solution. The data collected suggest a close relationship between anatomical traits and eco-physiological strategies in maintaining photosynthetic efficiency under saline stress conditions, highlighting the fundamental role of leaf anatomy in setting the limits of plant physiology.
