Molecular and metabolic traits of some Egyptian species of Cassia L. and Senna Mill (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae)

Summary: The taxonomical diversity of the genera Cassia and Senna in Egypt was authenticated through the analysis of morphological features, molecular barcoding using ITS sequences, RAPD analysis, and metabolic traits by GC-MS analysis. The results showed that the two genera can be clearly separated into two clusters, representing two distinct genera.

Lycium schweinfurthii: new secondary metabolites and their cytotoxic activities

Summary: Two new compounds and twenty-six known compounds were isolated from Lycium schweinfurthii, showing potential cytotoxic activity against skin cancer and colon cancer cell lines. Certain flavonoids demonstrated the highest cytotoxic activity, while displaying minimal toxicity towards normal skin and colon cells, suggesting their potential as selective and safe cytotoxic candidates.

Chemical and Biological Properties of Three Poorly Studied Species of Lycium Genus-Short Review

Summary: The genus Lycium, particularly Lycium barbarum, has been extensively studied for its health properties and is commonly known as a superfood. In contrast, species such as Lycium europaeum, Lycium intricatum, and Lycium schweinfurthii, which are found in the Mediterranean region, have been poorly investigated despite their use by native populations. This study reviewed the chemical composition and biological properties of these less-studied Lycium species and found that the metabolites isolated from them mainly belong to various compound groups such as polyphenols, fatty acids, polysaccharides, and terpenoids. Furthermore, these compounds were found to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties against certain cancer cell lines. Overall, there is a dearth of research on Lycium europaeum, Lycium intricatum, and Lycium schweinfurthii compared to Lycium barbarum.

Phytochemical analysis, antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities of Lycium europaeum fruits

Summary: Lycium europaeum is a medicinal herb used in many countries. This study found that methanol and ethyl acetate were the most effective solvents for extracting phenolic compounds from L. europaeum fruits and exhibited the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. These results support the use of L. europaeum fruit as a natural source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical applications.

Extensive nrDNA ITS polymorphism in Lycium: Non-concerted evolution and the identification of pseudogenes

The ITS paralogues were identified as pseudogenes or functional copies, with distinct differences from their corresponding functional copies. These compounds were tested for their inhibitory effect on alpha-glucosidase enzyme, with four of them showing potent inhibitory activity that could potentially be used as a therapeutic approach to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetic patients.

The ethanolic and alkaloid extracts from roots and leaves showed promising results in bioautography assays, particularly the alkaloid extracts demonstrated the strongest activity against oxidation and AChE.

Summary: The study successfully developed an in vitro micropropagation protocol for L. schweinfurthii and assessed the genetic stability of MiPs, as well as determined the phenolic, flavonoid, ferulic acid contents, and antioxidant activity in MiPs leaves. Genetic stability in MiPs was evaluated using different techniques, with Jaccard's similarity coefficients reaching 52%, 55%, and 82% in various analyses. MiPs' dried leaves were found to contain rich phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and ferulic acid, showing strong antioxidant activity.
