An integrated omics analysis reveals the gene expression profiles of maize, castor bean, and rapeseed for seed oil biosynthesis

Nian Liu et al.

Summary: This study compared the genome and transcriptome of high oil content seeds (castor bean and rapeseed) with low oil content seeds (maize), revealing that fewer oil biosynthetic genes were regulated during seed development in maize compared to the high-oil seeds. Additionally, many lipid-related genes in maize were not regulated during seed oil synthesis, highlighting differences in lipid biosynthesis mechanisms between maize, castor bean, and rapeseed. These findings provide insights into potential target genes for manipulating oil production in oil plants.

Genetic basis of maize kernel oil-related traits revealed by high-density SNP markers in a recombinant inbred line population

Hui Fang et al.

Summary: This study identified 62 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to oil traits in maize kernels, with 5 major QTLs located in three genomic regions. Two pairs of epistatic QTLs with additive effects were also detected. Colocalization with a previous GWAS on oil-related traits identified 19 genes, with two important candidate genes further verified to be associated with specific fatty acids. The results provide insights for improving maize quality through marker-assisted selection.

Natural variations in the P-type ATPase heavy metal transporter gene ZmHMA3 control cadmium accumulation in maize grains

Bin Tang et al.

Summary: This study identified a major locus (qCd1) controlling maize grain Cd accumulation through GWAS and bulked segregant RNA-seq analysis. The candidate gene ZmHMA3 was found to play a crucial role in maize grain Cd accumulation. Molecular markers developed based on natural variations in the ZmHMA3 gene can be used to predict grain Cd contents of different maize lines and hybrids.

Lipid metabolism and accumulation in oilseed crops

Magdalena Miklaszewska et al.

Summary: Triacylglycerols (TAGs) serve as the most important storage form of energy and carbon in eukaryotic cells and are essential macronutrients in animal and human diet, as well as major feedstock for industrial and energetic sectors. Oilseed crops are the primary source of TAGs and edible oils. Advances in research on plant lipid metabolism have provided insights into the molecular networks governing not only TAGs, but also other seed lipids, such as wax esters, sterols, and sphingolipids, contributing to a better understanding of the complex lipid web in oilseeds.
