Dynamics of Microbial Community and Potential Microbial Pollutants in Shopping Malls

Xin-Li An et al.

Summary: Shopping malls are unique ecosystems for the transmission of microorganisms of public health concern. Despite extensive investigation of natural environmental microbiomes, there is little knowledge about the microbial ecology in malls. Characterizing microbial distribution and potential pathogens will help establish a baseline for monitoring and preventing public health threats in malls.

Fates of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes during the cattle farm wastewater treatment process

Chengyu Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that cattle farm wastewater contains abundant antibiotic resistance genes, which can be gradually reduced in concentration through anaerobic treatment, phosphorus sludge digestion, membrane bioreactor, and ozone disinfection. The concentrations of ARGs are positively correlated with wastewater quality indicators, and there is also a positive correlation between iARGs and Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Spirochaetes.

Nanopore-based long-read metagenomics uncover the resistome intrusion by antibiotic resistant bacteria from treated wastewater in receiving water body

Ziqi Wu et al.

Summary: This study used nanopore long reads and a bioinformatic framework to identify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and resistant bacteria in the receiving water body of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The researchers found that the concentration of WWTP-borne resistant bacteria in the receiving water was 10 times higher than in clean water, with some of them being animal/human pathogens. Plasmids and class 1 integrons were identified as major vehicles for the persistence and dissemination of ARGs. The study highlights the importance of extensive carrier identification in understanding the driving force behind the accumulation of resistance genes in complex environmental conditions, and paves the way for effective mitigation strategies.

intI1 Type Mobile Genetic Elements Co-selected Antibiotic-Resistant Genes in Untreated Hospital Wastewaters

Osman Kayali et al.

Summary: The dissemination of antibiotic-resistant genes in hospital wastewaters is facilitated by horizontal gene transfer and association with mobile genetic elements. A study found that the MGEs carrying class 1 integron, particularly the gene intI1, played a major role in co-selecting various ARGs, including aadA, tetA, cmlA, and sul1, in the tested wastewaters. This positive correlation suggests the importance of MGEs in promoting the spread of ARGs.

Co-occurrence of crAssphage and antibiotic resistance genes in agricultural soils of the Yangtze River Delta, China

Wen Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that agricultural soil is highly susceptible to manure contamination and can serve as a potential source for the spread of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). CrAssphage, a highly human-specific indicator of fecal pollution, is strongly correlated with soil ARGs, with a particularly close relationship with the tetracycline resistance gene tetW. Regional differences in crAssphage and ARG abundances suggest varying levels of fecal pollution in different areas of the Yangtze River Delta. Efforts to reduce fecal pollution and control ARG transmission in agricultural soils could benefit from high sewage treatment capacity.

Molecular analysis of blaSHV, blaTEM, and blaCTX-M in extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae recovered from fecal specimens of animals

Hasan Ejaz et al.

Summary: The colonization of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in animal gut microbiota poses a significant global threat, with a high prevalence of bla(CTX-M), bla(TEM), and bla(SHV) variants among enterobacteria. These genes, along with integrons, contribute to extensive drug resistance in human strains, highlighting the limited therapeutic options available.

Profiles of bacteria/phage-comediated ARGs in pig farm wastewater treatment plants in China: Association with mobile genetic elements, bacterial communities and environmental factors

Yiwen Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the profiles of bacteria/phage-comediated antibiotic resistance genes in water samples collected from pig farm wastewater treatment plants in different regions of China. The research found multiple types and subtypes of these genes, as well as identified factors such as treatment methods and microbial communities that impact their abundance. This large-scale study provides valuable insights for the prevention and control of antibiotic resistance gene pollution in agricultural environments.

Conjugative plasmids interact with insertion sequences to shape the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes

You Che et al.

Summary: The study found that plasmid-borne antimicrobial resistance genes are mainly enriched in conjugative plasmids. Scientists reported the discovery of a massive insertion sequence-associated antimicrobial resistance gene transfer network, suggesting a general evolutionary mechanism for horizontal gene transfer mediated by the interaction between conjugative plasmids and ISs. Experimental results confirmed the importance of these interactions in aiding the horizontal transfer and expanding the genetic range of antimicrobial resistance genes within complex microbial communities.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in WWTP effluent-receiving water bodies and reclaimed wastewater treatment plants

Rumeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of antibiotics and ARGs in four WWTP effluents, downstream effluent-receiving water bodies and RWTPs. It was found that WWTP effluents were not the major contributors to the levels and species of antibiotics and ARGs in the surface water bodies. RWTPs showed good removal efficiency of antibiotics and ARGs.

High fecal carriage of blaCTX-M, blaCMY-2, and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes among healthy Korean people in a metagenomic analysis

Jieun Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the carriage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the gut microbiome of healthy individuals through whole metagenome sequencing. Results showed that individuals in the high ARG group tended to visit hospitals more often, especially for upper respiratory tract infections, and carried more bla(CTX-M) genes. Additionally, the presence of bla(CTX-M) correlated with ARG abundance in the gut resistome.
