Paenibacillus sp. Strain UY79, Isolated from a Root Nodule of Arachis villosa, Displays a Broad Spectrum of Antifungal Activity

Andres Costa et al.

Summary: A strain of Paenibacillus sp. UY79 isolated from wild peanut was found to exhibit antagonistic activity against various fungi and oomycetes. It produces volatile compounds that can inhibit the growth of these pathogens. Furthermore, it does not affect the symbiotic association or growth promotion of alfalfa plants when co-inoculated with rhizobia. This strain shows great potential as a biofungicide.

Broad-spectrum chemicals block ROS detoxification to prevent plant fungal invasion

Qianqian Yang et al.

Summary: Plant diseases have a significant impact on food security and are a global concern. The use of agrochemicals to control these diseases is currently common, but the development of drug resistance and off-target effects present challenges. This study identifies a mechanism of detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in fungi and develops potential fungicides to control plant diseases by targeting this mechanism.

Fusaricidins, Polymyxins and Volatiles Produced by Paenibacillus polymyxa Strains DSM 32871 and M1

Pascal Muelner et al.

Summary: Paenibacilli are efficient producers of potent agents against bacterial and fungal pathogens, producing lipopeptides like fusaricidins and polymyxins. These compounds are of interest in medicine and agrobiotechnology for their potential therapeutic applications, particularly against multiresistant Gram-negative bacteria. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) production is strain and medium-dependent, with Paenibacilli known for forming volatile pyrazine derivatives.

Comparative proteomic analysis of the fungal pathogen Neoscytalidium dimidiatum infection in the pitaya

Limei Pan et al.

Summary: This study used quantitative proteomics to investigate pitaya immune responses against the pathogenic fungus Neoscytalidium dimidiatum (Nd). The results revealed the involvement of many essential proteins associated with photosynthesis, phytohormone activity, ROS homeostasis, and pathogenic defense responses in the defense against Nd infection. Accumulation of phytohormones auxin and abscisic acid, as well as changes in ROS metabolism, were shown to be important for defense against Nd invasion.

Novel Cyclic Lipopeptides Fusaricidin Analogs for Treating Wound Infections

Joel Gil et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and evaluation of two novel cyclic lipopeptides (CLP), CLP 2605-4 and CLP 2612-8.1, against methicillin-resistant S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Both CLPs were able to significantly reduce bacterial counts and promote wound healing, with peptide 2605-4 showing higher levels of inflammation and impaired wound healing. Efforts towards identifying new antimicrobials that can combat bacterial infections without impeding tissue repair are highlighted.
