Abundance and diversity of eukaryotic rather than bacterial community relate closely to the trophic level of urban lakes

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: Based on the study of algal bloom development stage in urban lakes, it was found that bacteria had higher abundance and diversity than eukaryotes, while the abundance and diversity of eukaryotes were closely related to the water trophic level. Eukaryotic community exhibited stronger species replacement, broader environmental adaptation, and stronger phylogenetic signal, while bacterial community showed stronger community stability and environmental constraint. The composition of bacterial and eukaryotic communities was influenced by stochastic and differentiating processes.

Microbial community composition of translocated ancient woodland soil: a case study

Nicolas Borchers et al.

Summary: Soil translocation is an ecological habitat restoration technique that involves moving topsoil from one site to another. This study investigated the changes in soil chemistry and microbial community composition after the translocation of semi-ancient woodland soil to a nearby pasture. The results showed that the translocated soil had similar microbial community profile as the original woodland soil, but exhibited alterations in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and bacterial fatty acids, as well as an increase in pH. The study concluded that the translocated soil retained some characteristics of a woodland soil but showed signs of disturbance.

Rare Species-Driven Diversity-Ecosystem Multifunctionality Relationships are Promoted by Stochastic Community Assembly

Zhengqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The relative functional importance of rare and abundant species in driving relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functions remains unknown. Here, we highlighted the importance of rare species for ecosystem multifunctionality. Stochastic assembly processes promoted the positive effects of diversity of rare taxa on multifunctionality, while reducing their diversity and multifunctionality overall.

The assembly of methanotrophic communities regulated by soil pH in a mountain ecosystem

Chaonan Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated methanotrophic bacteria along an elevational gradient in Mount Gongga, China, and found previously unrecognized AOB-rel methanotrophs predominating in mountain forest soils. The results showed that soil pH, temperature, and precipitation primarily shaped methanotrophic communities, and the assembly of aerobic methanotrophs was mainly governed by deterministic processes. Additionally, the study highlighted the significant role of soil pH in the assembly of aerobic methanotrophic communities and reinforced the importance of AOB-rel methanotrophs in the atmospheric methane oxidation process in mountain forest soils.

High microbial diversity stabilizes the responses of soil organic carbon decomposition to warming in the subsoil on the Tibetan Plateau

Meng Xu et al.

Summary: Soil microbes, especially microbial biodiversity, play a crucial role in regulating the temperature sensitivity of soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition. This study conducted in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau revealed that the ratio of gram-positive to gram-negative bacteria in topsoil and the diversity of soil bacteria and fungi in subsoil are closely related to the temperature sensitivity of SOC decomposition. The findings suggest that maintaining microbial biodiversity is essential for stabilizing SOC decomposition in alpine montane ecosystems under climate change.

Environmental adaptation is stronger for abundant rather than rare microorganisms in wetland soils from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: Abundant microbes show stronger environmental adaptability and are less sensitive to changes, while rare microbes are more sensitive to environmental variations. Community assembly of abundant microbes is dominated by stochastic processes, while rare microbes are predominantly governed by deterministic processes.

Bridging Rare and Abundant Bacteria with Ecosystem Multifunctionality in Salinized Agricultural Soils: from Community Diversity to Environmental Adaptation

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: This study found that rare bacteria exhibit closer phylogenetic clustering and broader environmental breadths, while abundant bacteria show higher functional redundancies and stronger phylogenetic signals of ecological preferences. Salinity plays a decisive role in mediating the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes, significantly affecting functions and diversities of both rare and abundant bacteria. Rare bacterial taxonomic alpha-diversity and abundant bacterial phylogenetic alpha-diversity significantly contribute to ecosystem multifunctionality in salinized soils.

Deadwood-Inhabiting Bacteria Show Adaptations to Changing Carbon and Nitrogen Availability During Decomposition

Vojtech Tlaskal et al.

Summary: Deadwood decomposition plays a significant role in carbon turnover in natural forests, with fungal biomass and nitrogen content increasing during the decomposition process. Different bacterial groups in deadwood exhibit varying adaptations to carbon and nitrogen utilization, with some containing diverse gene sets for efficient decomposition of plant and fungal cell wall biopolymers. Meanwhile, certain bacteria show rich gene complements for key steps in the nitrogen cycle in deadwood, such as nitrogen fixation and nitrate/nitrite reduction.

Soil pH and moisture govern the assembly processes of abundant and rare bacterial communities in a dryland montane forest

Jianming Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that there are different assembly mechanisms underlying distinct biogeographic patterns in rare and abundant bacterial subcommunities in dryland montane forests. Rare bacterial subcommunities are mainly controlled by variable selection, while abundant subcommunities are predominantly influenced by dispersal limitation.
