SSBP1 drives high fructose-induced glomerular podocyte ferroptosis via activating DNA-PK/p53 pathway

Wen-Yuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study identified a novel mechanism by which high fructose consumption induces programmed cell death, known as ferroptosis, in glomerular podocytes. The researchers found that mitochondrial single-strand DNA-binding protein 1 (SSBP1) is significantly upregulated in glomeruli of high fructose-fed rats and plays a crucial role in driving ferroptosis. SSBP1 activates DNA-PK/p53 pathway to promote cell death, and depletion of SSBP1 alleviates high fructose-induced podocyte injury. The natural antioxidant pterostilbene was found to inhibit SSBP1 and alleviate podocyte ferroptosis in high fructose-induced glomerular injury.

Haixia Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that the cell-free supernatant (CFS) of Streptomyces sp. CX3 has antagonistic effects against the blueberry canker pathogen Botryosphaeria dothidea. The CFS not only suppressed the growth and reproduction of the pathogen, but also damaged its plasma membrane, reducing the accumulation of energy and nutrients. Field experiments confirmed the efficacy of CFS in controlling blueberry canker.

Construction of a compound microbial agent for biocontrol against Fusarium wilt of banana

Chanjuan Du et al.

Summary: This study constructed an effective compound microbial agent to control Fusarium wilt of banana (FWB) by combining multiple biocontrol strains. The experimental results showed that the combination of biocontrol strains had a higher control effect on FWB compared to single strains. Furthermore, combinations with larger taxonomic differences were more likely to achieve a higher control effect. Among the combinations, the four-strain combination T28 demonstrated the highest and most stable control effect.

Antifungal Mechanism of Metabolites from Newly Isolated Streptomyces sp. Y1-14 against Banana Fusarium Wilt Disease Using Metabolomics

Miaomiao Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, a strain of Streptomyces Y1-14 was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of a banana plantation, which exhibited strong antagonistic activity against the banana Fusarium wilt pathogen, Foc TR4. The extracts of Y1-14 strain disrupted the cell membrane and mycelial ultrastructure of Foc TR4, inhibiting its growth and spore germination. Metabolomic analysis revealed that the extracts of Y1-14 strain impacted the carbohydrate metabolism pathway of Foc TR4, disrupting its energy metabolism.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibitory effect of PPPIF, a derivative compound from harmine officinalis, on the growth and development of P. litchii. The results showed that PPPIF severely damaged the mitochondria, cell wall, and endomembrane system of P. litchii cells, leading to abnormal morphology and deformed mycelia. PPPIF also caused various physiological and biochemical changes in P. litchii, disrupting energy metabolism and inhibiting growth. These findings enhance our understanding of P. litchii resistance mechanisms and have implications for the development of more potent inhibitors against plant diseases.

Actinobacteria as a source of biofertilizer/biocontrol agents for bio-organic agriculture

Manigundan Kaari et al.

Summary: The global increase in human population and depletion of natural energy supplies pose threats to environmental demands, food security, and energy supply. To meet the rising demand for food, there is a need for increased agricultural output. However, heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers has resulted in environmental damage and health risks, making it an expensive option. One potential solution is the use of beneficial microorganisms, particularly Actinobacteria, as a substitute for artificial fertilizers in food production.
