Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Origin in Pediatric Age Group: Recent Outbreaks and Approach to Management

Neil Patel et al.

Summary: Acute hepatitis is a growing concern with recent outbreaks affecting pediatric populations in around 35 countries, including developed nations. The outbreaks have been associated with devastating liver failure in approximately 10% of affected patients. Clinical presentation resembles typical acute hepatitis symptoms, but tests have come back negative for known hepatitis viruses, leading to the term non-HepA-E hepatitis. Adenovirus and SARS-CoV-2 have been identified as potential causes. International efforts are underway to establish diagnostic and management protocols to control these outbreaks. This comprehensive review aims to provide evidence-based conclusions to assist clinicians.

Adenovirus infection in children hospitalized with pneumonia in Guangzhou, China

Lirong Zou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and genotype of HAdVs among children hospitalized with pneumonia in Guangzhou, China from January 2013 to June 2019. The results showed that HAdV-B7 and HAdV-B3 were the common types detected during the study period, with the predominant HAdV genotype shifting from HAdV-B3 in 2015-2016 to HAdV-B7 in 2017-2018. The discrepancies in HAdV detection rates in different study periods and changes in predominant types over time emphasize the importance of continued surveillance.

Application of Human Adenovirus Genotyping by Phylogenetic Analysis in an Outbreak to Identify Nosocomial Infection

Chuanyu Yang et al.

Summary: Nosocomial infections of human adenovirus (HAdV) were investigated in a pediatric hospital in Beijing. Genotyping based on phylogenetic analysis combined with clinical data showed that most cases were community acquired infections rather than nosocomial infections, with only a minority potentially being transmitted within the hospital.
