Molecular Epidemiology of New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli in Food-Producing Animals in China

Xu Kuang et al.

Summary: This study conducted molecular surveillance on carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) colonization in food-producing animals in China, primarily swine and poultry, over a period of three years. The results revealed that food-producing animals in China, specifically pigs and chickens, serve as an important reservoir for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM)-positive E. coli. Whole genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis were used to investigate the genomic characteristics of the carbapenemase-producing isolates. The study highlights the potential threat to public health posed by NDM-positive E. coli in food-producing animals in China.

Genomic Analysis of a Highly Virulent NDM-1-Producing Escherichia coli ST162 Infecting a Pygmy Sperm Whale (Kogia breviceps) in South America

Fabio P. Sellera et al.

Summary: A carbapenem-resistant NDM-1-positive Escherichia coli isolate was recovered from a stranded pygmy sperm whale in Brazil. The isolate carried multiple antimicrobial resistance genes, as well as genes associated with heavy metal and biocide resistance. It exhibited halotolerance and virulent behavior, and was closely related to poultry- and human-associated lineages circulating in Europe and Asia. The presence of carbapenemase-producing pathogens in coastal water poses an emerging threat that requires urgent assessment of the role of the aquatic environment in their global epidemiology.

Emergence of a NDM-1-producing ST25 Klebsiella pneumoniae strain causing neonatal sepsis in China

Junhui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reports the first infection caused by bla(NDM-1)-positive ST25 Klebsiella pneumoniae in a neonatal unit. The strain was highly virulent and resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents. These findings highlight the need for stricter surveillance and more effective actions to prevent the dissemination of such K. pneumoniae strains in clinical settings, especially in neonatal wards.

Prevalence and risk factors of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales positivity by active screening in intensive care units in the Henan Province of China: A multi-center cross-sectional study

Bo Guo et al.

Summary: In ICUs in Henan Province, the positive rate of CRE was very high, mainly KPC-type CR-KPN. Prolonged ICU stay, chronic neurological disease, transfer from other hospitals, previous infection, and history of antibiotic exposure are risk factors for CRE. Age and cardiovascular diseases are susceptibility factors for mixed infections of CRE. The positive rate of CRE in tertiary hospitals was higher than that in secondary hospitals, which may be related to patient source, antibiotic exposure, disease severity, and previous infection.

Beta-lactamase determinants and molecular typing of carbapenem-resistant classic and hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates from southwest of Iran

Morteza Saki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant classic Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-cKp) and carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-hvKp) isolates in southwestern Iran. The occurrence of MDR CR-hvKp isolates harboring bla(NDM) and bla(GES) was detected for the first time in this region. Long-term surveillance and more effective treatment strategies are needed to prevent the spread of CR-hvKp.

Minhye Shin et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus RF122 Feo system is a major pathogen causing bovine mastitis, and the new antimicrobial agent PHT-427 efficiently inhibits this system, attenuating various virulence factors related to milk quality, enhancing bacterial antibiotic susceptibility, and showing no toxicity on animal model systems.
