Carbon assimilating fungi from surface ocean to subseafloor revealed by coupled phylogenetic and stable isotope analysis

William D. Orsi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of fungi in the marine carbon cycle using C-13 DNA stable isotope probing and phylogenetic analysis. The findings showed that saprotrophic fungi related to the yeast Malassezia were the main fungal foragers of pelagic dEPS, while fungi in sulfidic sediments assimilated more carbon from chemosynthetic bacteria. The research reveals the functional relevance of fungal diversity in structuring carbon flow in marine ecosystems.

Microbial Activities and Selection from Surface Ocean to Subseafloor on the Namibian Continental Shelf

Aurele Vuillemin et al.

Summary: Microbial activities in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) have significant impacts on the Earth's climate and nutrient equilibrium. This study investigated the role of sulfur-cycling microbes in carbon assimilation within OMZs and related seabed habitats using C-13 DNA stable isotope probing and metatranscriptomics. The findings suggest that many active taxa in both planktonic and benthic communities participate in fixing or assimilating carbon, and their distribution can be influenced by mixing of shelf waters. This research contributes to a better understanding of carbon and sulfur cycling in OMZs and their potential environmental consequences.

Quantifying the effects of hydrogen on carbon assimilation in a seafloor microbial community associated with ultramafic rocks

Oemer K. Coskun et al.

Summary: Thermodynamic models predict that H-2 is beneficial for seafloor microbial life, and this study found that H-2 can increase carbon assimilation by microbial communities associated with peridotite rocks. The unique geochemistry of peridotite-hosted ecosystems has selected for H-2-metabolizing, rock-associated taxa that can enhance anabolism under high H-2 concentrations. These findings suggest that the link between H-2 and carbon assimilation may be widespread in geological settings where ultramafic rocks are present.

Diverse nitrogen cycling pathways across a marine oxygen gradient indicate nitrogen loss coupled to chemoautotrophic activity

Elizabeth A. Suter et al.

Summary: Genetic markers and geochemical assays were used to study microbial nitrogen cycling processes in the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela. The study found that denitrifier activity is closely related to nitrate availability, and identified a diverse array of denitrifiers, including chemoautotrophs capable of using nitrate to oxidize reduced sulfur species. The results suggest that autotrophic carbon cycling also plays a significant role in the nitrogen cycle of the Cariaco Basin, in addition to organic matter oxidation and anammox processes.

Microbial Ecology of Oxygen Minimum Zones Amidst Ocean Deoxygenation

Andrew M. Long et al.

Summary: Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) have significant effects on marine microbial ecology and biogeochemical processes, especially under low oxygen conditions. Microorganisms in OMZs play important roles in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling, with involvement of viruses and protists. Additionally, the different roles of microbial communities in oxic and anoxic environments are noteworthy for understanding microbial responses to deoxygenation.

Sulfur cycling in oceanic oxygen minimum zones

Cameron M. Callbeck et al.

Summary: The sulfur cycle plays a crucial role in oxygen minimum zones, particularly in highly productive coastal areas, where sulfide-rich sediments interact with the water column. Active blooms of sulfide-oxidizing bacteria help detoxify sulfide and contribute to nitrogen loss and greenhouse gas emissions. The widespread distribution and multifaceted nature of the sulfur cycle in oceanic oxygen minimum zones highlight its importance for biogeochemical processes.

Small sinking particles control anammox rates in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone

Clarissa Karthaeuser et al.

Summary: The study reveals a strong correlation between anammox rates and the volume of small particles in oxygen minimum zones, highlighting the important role of particles in fueling the anammox process by releasing ammonium. It also suggests that small sinking particles play a significant role in controlling oceanic nutrient budgets and could be used to estimate nitrogen loss across large areas.
