Cyanobacteria and Algae Meet at the Limits of Their Habitat Ranges in Moderately Acidic Hot Springs

Summary: It was found that Cyanobacteria of the genus Chlorogloeopsis and algae of the genus Cyanidioschyzon coexisted in thermal springs with pH values ranging from 3.0 to 5.5 in Yellowstone National Park. Cyanobacteria were more abundant than rhodophyte algae, and the fluctuation in physicochemical characteristics of the springs may affect the microbial community composition.

Summary: Photosynthetic bacteria in hot springs play a crucial role in microbial evolution and ecology. While previous studies have mainly focused on oxygenic photosynthesis in cyanobacteria, there are still many unanswered questions regarding the metabolic potential and ecology of hot spring anoxygenic phototrophs. This study examined the distribution of genes involved in phototrophy, carbon fixation, and nitrogen fixation in alkaline hot springs of Yellowstone National Park. The findings highlight the importance of geographic isolation and local conditions in shaping the distribution and functional potential of phototrophic bacteria in hot springs.
