Subglacial lakes and their changing role in a warming climate

Stephen J. Livingstone et al.

Summary: This review provides the first global inventory of subglacial lakes, outlining their settings, impacts, and potential changes with climate warming. Subglacial lakes have repositories of ancient climate conditions, provide habitats for life, and influence ice flow, basal hydrology, biogeochemical fluxes, and geomorphic activity. The behavior of these lakes is influenced by their subglacial setting and the mass balance regime of the overlying ice mass. Climate warming is predicted to reduce the number and size of subglacial lakes in regions with steeper ice surfaces, but increase activity with higher discharge drainages of shorter duration.

Multiple subglacial water bodies below the south pole of Mars unveiled by new MARSIS data

Sebastian Emanuel Lauro et al.

Summary: The Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) detected liquid water in the south polar region of Mars, sparking debate about the origin and stability of liquid water under present-day Martian conditions. New data confirmed the presence of a lake and suggested a complex hydrologic system, possibly composed of salty brines. The results indicate a liquid water body at Ultimi Scopuli and the presence of other wet areas nearby.

Scientific access into Mercer Subglacial Lake: scientific objectives, drilling operations and initial observations

John C. Priscu et al.

Summary: The SALSA Project used environmentally clean hot-water drilling to access Mercer Subglacial Lake in Antarctica, collecting various samples and observing the interactions among ice, water, sediment, rock, microbes, and carbon reservoirs. Data showed hydrodynamic water mixing between the borehole and lake, with little effect on the stratigraphy of surficial sediment cores from debris fall-out.
