Microporous structure and gas adsorption model of fusain in lignite

Geng Li et al.

Summary: The study focused on the microporous structure and gas adsorption mechanism of fusain in lignite, revealing that removal of water under dry conditions creates effective space for gas adsorption, leading to higher adsorption capacity, while water occupying methane adsorption sites under wet conditions results in decreased gas adsorption ability in fusain micropores. Despite similar chemical structure characteristics, there are differences in pore size and methane adsorption properties when comparing fusain and meta-anthracite.

Macrolithotype controls on natural fracture characteristics of ultra-thick lignite in Erlian Basin, China: Implication for favorable coalbed methane reservoirs

Ming Yuan et al.

Summary: Understanding the distribution of fracture systems in CBM reservoirs is crucial for enhancing coalbed methane development. This study investigates the impact of different coal macrolithotypes on coal fracture development through mechanical property analysis and petrography and palynology tests. The results reveal a relationship between coal facies and fracture system characteristics, providing insights for predicting fracture system development in ultra-thick coal seams.

Facets of coalbed methane reservoir in East Bokaro Basin, India

Mollika Bannerjee et al.

Summary: The study shows that the East Bokaro Basin in the Damodar valley is a potentially prospective area for CBM play due to its significant cumulative coal seam thickness and gas content. The research findings provide valuable insights into gas release, diffusion, and adsorption based on detailed analysis of organic content and pore structures in coal.

Differentiation of Carbon Isotope Composition and Stratabound Mechanism of Gas Desorption in Shallow-Buried Low-Rank Multiple Coal Seams: Case Study of Well DE-A, Northeast Inner Mongolia

Geng Li et al.

Summary: The study discusses the characteristics of methane isotopes in coalbed gas in the Labudalin Basin of northeastern Inner Mongolia, and analyzes the reasons for the heavier delta C-13((CH4)) and delta D-(CH4). It is found that different coal groups and coal seams have varying isotopic characteristics, with the presence of thermogenic gas, anaerobic oxidation of methane microorganisms, and desorption-fractionation of methane isotopes being important factors. Additionally, the thermal cause and the carbon isotope fractionation of methane contribute to the variation in methane carbon isotopes.

Geochemical characterization and origin of kerogens from source-rock of Devonian in the Amazonas Basin, Brazil

Iasmine M. S. Souza et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 37 Devonian shale samples from the Barreirinha Formation to evaluate hydrocarbon source potential, depositional paleoenvironments, and thermal effects of igneous intrusions. Results showed that samples from the northern border had excellent hydrocarbon source potential with type III kerogen, while samples from the southern border had a range of source potential with type II and III kerogens. Organic extracts and biomarkers suggested different depositional environments, with northern samples showing marine anoxic to oxic conditions and southern samples showing suboxic to oxic conditions. The thermal maturity of the shale samples also differed, with northern samples being at the end of the oil generation window and southern samples at the beginning of the oil generation window.

Back-arc tectonic tempos: Records from Jurassic-Cretaceous basins in the eastern North China Craton

Nan Su et al.

Summary: Research in the western Liaoning region of eastern China has revealed four extensional stages and three compressional events during the Jurassic-Cretaceous period. Each extensional stage lasted 20-40 million years with associated volcanism, while each compressional event lasted around 1 million years on a 30-40 million year cycle. The back-arc tectonic evolution shows a frequent alternation between long-lived extensional phases and short-lived compressional events.

Comparative analysis of the pore structure of fusain in lignite and high-volatile bituminous coal

Geng Li et al.

Summary: Fusain samples from lignite and high-volatile bituminous coal were obtained and analyzed for their morphological characteristics and pore structure. The results showed significant differences in pore volume and specific surface area between the two types of fusain samples. Additionally, fusain from lignite was found to be more conducive to free gas, while that from high-volatile bituminous coal was more conducive to both adsorbed gas and free gas.

Kinetics and fractionation of hydrogen isotopes during gas formation from representative functional groups

Shuang-Fang Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a gold tube simulation device was used to investigate the cleavage of representative compounds into gas and the hydrogen isotope composition change in gaseous hydrocarbons during maturity. Gas chromatography and isotopic analyses were conducted to determine the relationship between yield of natural gas components, hydrogen isotopic composition, experimental temperature, and heating rate. Chemical kinetic models were established and calibrated to describe the hydrogen isotopic fractionation during the evolution of gas-forming organic materials. The study found that reactions in the low-activation-energy region contributed more to regular methane generation, while reactions in the high-activation-energy region had a greater impact on deuterium-rich methane production.
