Gut microbiota modulates COPD pathogenesis: role of anti-inflammatory Parabacteroides goldsteinii lipopolysaccharide

Hsin-Chih Lai et al.

Summary: The study found that gut microbiota composition significantly affects cigarette smoking-induced COPD development, and fecal microbiota transplantation can restore COPD pathogenesis. A beneficial bacterium Parabacteroides goldsteinii was isolated and shown to ameliorate COPD, with its derived active component having anti-inflammatory effects and ameliorating COPD through inhibition of lung inflammation and regulation of host metabolism.

Childhood Asthma Incidence, Early and Persistent Wheeze, and Neighborhood Socioeconomic Factors in the ECHO/CREW Consortium

Antonella Zanobetti et al.

Summary: Black and Hispanic children in the United States have higher rates of asthma and asthma-related morbidity compared with white children, and this study found that neighborhood-level socioeconomic indicators play a role in explaining these racial and ethnic disparities in childhood wheezing and asthma. Black and Hispanic children are at higher risk for asthma in neighborhoods of all income levels.

The sputum microbiome, airway inflammation, and mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Alison J. Dicker et al.

Summary: The study found that the sputum microbiome of COPD patients is closely related to disease severity, frequent exacerbations, blood eosinophil levels, etc., and different dominant microbiomes have different impacts. The diversity of sputum microbiomes is closely related to the development and mortality of COPD.

The gastrointestinal microbiota in colorectal cancer cell migration and invasion

Charlotte Henstra et al.

Summary: Colorectal carcinoma is the third most common cancer in developed countries and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Interest in the influence of intestinal microbiota on CRC has increased rapidly in recent years, with factors such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Enterococcus faecalis contributing to disease progression by affecting cell-cell adhesion and the extracellular matrix. Understanding how bacterial factors promote CRC recurrence and metastasis is essential for improving patient survival, and further human-based models are needed to study these mechanisms.

Insights into gut microbiome and its functional pathways in asthma patients through high-throughput sequencing

Chunrong Huang et al.

Summary: The study described the gut microbiome and functional genes of asthma patients, finding that inhaled corticosteroid treatment affects the microbial composition. There are microbial differences and different functional pathways among different asthma patients, including those receiving and not receiving ICS treatment.

Exogenous Fecal Microbial Transplantation Alters Fearfulness, Intestinal Morphology, and Gut Microbiota in Broilers

Chao Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that transferring fecal microbiota from aged broilers donors to recipients can improve body weight, behavior, intestinal development, and gut microbiota composition. Fearfulness was higher in the control group compared to the broiler recipient group, while intestinal development indicators were also higher in the BR group. Beta diversity of gut microbiota showed differences between the CK and BR groups.

Nasal and Fecal Microbiota and Immunoprofiling of Infants With and Without RSV Bronchiolitis

Claudio Alba et al.

Summary: This study assessed the nasal and fecal microbiota and immune profiles in infants with RSV bronchiolitis, comparing them to healthy infants. Results showed higher presence of Haemophilus in nasal samples of bronchiolitis group, while fecal microbiota was similar between bronchiolitis and healthy infants. Elevated levels of BAFF/TNFSF13B were found in nasal samples of bronchiolitis group, along with other inflammatory factors.

Follow-up study of airway microbiota in children with persistent wheezing

Lei Wu et al.

Summary: This study suggests that alterations in lower airway microbiota may be strongly associated with the development of wheezing and wheezing recurrence later in life. The study also found significant differences in microbial composition details between PW children and the control group. The results also showed that wheezing history, gender, and caesarean section have a greater impact on the composition of airway microbiota.

Jessica C. Ezeji et al.

Summary: Parabacteroides distasonis is the type strain for the genus Parabacteroides, a group of gram-negative anaerobic bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of various species. The genus, consisting of 15 species, has been associated with both beneficial and pathogenic effects on human health.
