Targeting Echinococcus multilocularis PIM kinase for improving anti-parasitic chemotherapy

Akito Koike et al.

Summary: The potentially lethal zoonosis alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, and current treatment options are limited. In this study, we identified the proto-oncogene PIM kinase as a promising target for anti-AE chemotherapy.

SMART: recent updates, new developments and status in 2020

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: SMART is a web resource for protein domain identification and annotation, with over 1300 manually curated models and 68 new models added for various recombinase families. Updates also include synchronization with UniProt, Ensembl, and STRING databases, as well as enhancements to the protein display engine and domain architecture analysis components.

A MEKK1-JNK mitogen activated kinase (MAPK) cascade module is active in Echinococcus multilocularis stem cells

Kristin Stoll et al.

Summary: Through bioinformatic approaches, cloning, and yeast two-hybrid analyses, a novel mitogen-activated kinase (MAPK) cascade module consisting of E. multilocularis orthologs of Growth factor receptor-bound 2, EmGrb2, EmMEKK1, EmMKK3, and EmMPK3 was identified. This cascade module is expressed in E. multilocularis stem cells and plays a crucial role in stress responses, cytoskeletal rearrangements, and apoptosis, suggesting a potential target for chemotherapeutics against echinococcosis.

Morphological Characteristics of Alveolar and Cystic Echinococcosis Lesions in Human Liver and Bone

Thomas F. E. Barth et al.

Summary: Cystic and alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis, are two neglected infectious diseases with distinct microscopic features and global public health impact. Pathologists have limited diagnostic experience due to the rarity of these zoonotic diseases, making immunohistology using monoclonal antibodies essential for definitive diagnosis.

activin-2 is required for regeneration of polarity on the planarian anterior-posterior axis

Jennifer K. Cloutier et al.

Summary: This study explores the decision-making process of head-tail regeneration polarity in planarians and reveals the crucial role of Activin signaling in determining the outcome. The findings provide important insights into understanding the mechanisms underlying regeneration.

Web-based LinRegPCR: application for the visualization and analysis of (RT)-qPCR amplification and melting data

Andreas Untergasser et al.

Summary: The analysis of amplification and melting curves in qPCR experiments provides valuable information on reaction quality and leads to reliable results. The LinRegPCR web application allows visualization and analysis of individual qPCR runs, highlighting deviant reactions for further calculation of gene-expression ratios and fold-change between conditions.
