External validation of VO2max prediction models based on recreational and elite endurance athletes

Szczepan Wiecha et al.

Summary: This study compared predicted VO2max (pVO2max) with directly measured VO2max and found that the accuracy of available prediction models has not been validated in endurance athletes. The models underestimated pVO2max in younger and higher trained athletes, and overestimated pVO2max in older and lower trained athletes. These models should only be used as a supplemental method for physicians and new models need to be developed for clinical practice and sports diagnostics.

Cardiorespiratory kinetics in exercise physiology: estimates and predictions using randomized changes in work rate

Uwe Hoffmann et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the kinetics of cardiorespiratory parameters in response to changes in work rate using PRBS testing. Two algorithms were used to predict steady state values and responses to incremental increases in exercise intensity. The results showed that the algorithm in the time domain provided better predictions for certain parameters like oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output.

Validity of Estimating the Maximal Oxygen Consumption by Consumer Wearables: A Systematic Review with Meta-analysis and Expert Statement of the INTERLIVE Network

Pablo Molina-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed previous validation studies on the estimation of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) by consumer wearables. The results showed that wearables using exercise-based algorithms provided higher accuracy for estimating VO2max compared to those using resting conditions. However, there is still a large estimation error at the individual level, indicating a need for improvement in these methods for sport/clinical purposes. The study also provided best-practice recommendations for future validation protocols.

Transferability of Cardiopulmonary Parameters between Treadmill and Cycle Ergometer Testing in Male Triathletes-Prediction Formulae

Szczepan Wiecha et al.

Summary: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a common method in sports diagnostics, and this research aims to create models using CPET results from one modality to predict results for the other modality. The study found that CPET parameters can be accurately predicted between different testing modalities, and maximal parameters are more predictable than submaximal ones. The equations created in this study, combined with body composition analysis, can be used as an effective method in comprehensive sports diagnostics.

A Narrative Review for a Machine Learning Application in Sports: An Example Based on Injury Forecasting in Soccer

Alessio Rossi et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in studies that apply machine learning algorithms to sports, particularly in injury forecasting and athlete performance prediction. This narrative review aims to provide a guideline for training, validating, and testing machine learning models in sports science, highlighting strengths and limitations throughout the model development process to reduce potential errors and misleading results.

Normative cardiopulmonary exercise data for endurance athletes: the Cardiopulmonary Health and Endurance Exercise Registry (CHEER)

Bradley J. Petek et al.

Summary: Accurate interpretation of CPET in endurance athletes relies on specific reference values. Existing prediction equations derived from general population cohorts perform poorly among competitive endurance athletes. Newly derived CPET reference values and VO2peak prediction equations improve the clinical utility in this population.

A unified approach to sample size and power determination for testing parameters in generalized linear and time-to-event regression models

Michael J. Martens et al.

Summary: In order to properly address research aims, determining sample size and power is crucial. Regression modeling allows for more precise estimation of variable effects but can lead to increased complexity, especially when dealing with correlated covariates in observational studies and non-randomized clinical trials. Existing methods for sample size and power determination lack a general theory applicable to various regression models and covariate distributions, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive approach.

HR Max Prediction Based on Age, Body Composition, Fitness Level, Testing Modality and Sex in Physically Active Population

Jacek Lach et al.

Summary: Maximal heart rate is mainly associated with age, but age alone may not provide accurate prediction in certain groups. Multiple regression models that include variables such as fitness level and body mass slightly improve the accuracy of prediction. The formula developed in this study showed the best performance in predicting maximal heart rate, while previously published formulae may have limitations in certain subgroups.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Sport Research: An Introduction for Non-data Scientists

Nader Chmait et al.

Summary: Artificial intelligence has greatly impacted the way sports are consumed and analyzed in the past two decades. Despite the rapid expansion of AI in sports decision-making and forecasting, the connection between AI and sports remains unclear for many, and the motivations for adopting a machine learning paradigm in sports analytics are still vague. This paper provides a non-technical overview of the machine learning paradigm's potential in enhancing sports analytics, along with a summary of relevant research literature and hypothetical scenarios of how AI and machine learning could shape the future of sports.
