IDH2-mediated regulation of the biogenesis of the oxidative phosphorylation system

Anjaneyulu Murari et al.

Summary: This study reveals that disruption of the mitochondrial NADPH-generating enzyme IDH2 in Drosophila flight muscles leads to elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impairment of oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS) assembly. The impairment begins with inhibited biosynthesis of the matrix domain of CI and affects multiple OXPHOS complexes. Despite the activation of compensatory mechanisms, ferroptotic cell death occurs, implicating hydrogen peroxide as the signaling molecule involved. IDH2 plays a role in modulating CI assembly and ultimately the entire OXPHOS.

A universal coupling mechanism of respiratory complex I

Vladyslav Kravchuk et al.

Summary: We used cryo-electron microscopy to study the structures of Escherichia coli complex I in different redox states. We found that complex I can exist in an open state, where the quinone cavity is exposed to the cytosol, and a closed state, where the quinone cavity is tightly connected to the membrane arm. Through a series of proton transfers and electrostatic interactions, we propose a detailed mechanism for the coupling of complex I and related enzymes.

Structure and assembly of the mammalian mitochondrial supercomplex CIII2CIV

Irene Vercellino et al.

Summary: The enzymes of the mitochondrial electron transport chain play a vital role in cell metabolism, forming supercomplexes in vivo. The assembly factor SCAF1 is crucial in mediating the assembly of CIII2CIV, but not involved in the assembly of the respirasome. Assembling into supercomplexes enhances the catalytic efficiency of CIII2 and CIV, potentially fine tuning the electron transfer efficiency in the electron transport chain.

Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae): A Decade of Research Towards a Sustainable Integrated Pest Management Program

Gabriella Tait et al.

Summary: Drosophila suzukii, also known as spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), is a highly adaptive pest that has caused significant economic impacts in fruit production regions worldwide. The pest's infestation leads to yield losses, shortened shelf life of fruits, and increased production costs, affecting fresh markets, frozen berries, and fruit export programs. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies show promise in reducing chemical inputs, but require substantial changes to horticultural practices.
