The association of physical activity with loneliness, social isolation, and selected psychological protective factors among older adults

Shirley Musich et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between physical activity levels and loneliness, social isolation, protective factors, and healthcare expenditure patterns. The findings showed that moderate and high physical activity levels were associated with lower risks of loneliness and social isolation, as well as higher protective factors. Physical activity was also found to mitigate increased healthcare expenditures associated with loneliness, social isolation, and low levels of protective factors.

Do High Mental Demands at Work Protect Cognitive Health in Old Age via Hippocampal Volume? Results From a Community Sample

Francisca S. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study found that higher demands in language and knowledge, information processing, and creativity at work were associated with larger brain white and gray matter volume and better cognitive functioning. Higher demands in pattern detection may be linked to a brain retention effect in later life. However, there were no significant associations between hippocampal volume and mental demands at work.

Large, open datasets for human connectomics research: Considerations for reproducible and responsible data use

Angela R. Laird

Summary: This review explores the evolution of data sharing in magnetic resonance imaging and the challenges and progress in reproducible data analyses. It emphasizes the ethical conduct relevant to analyses of large, open datasets and the responsibility of researchers to prevent further stigmatization of historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups.

Considering sex as a biological variable will require a global shift in science culture

Rebecca M. Shansky et al.

Summary: For over half a century, male rodents have been the default model organism in preclinical neuroscience research, leading to higher misdiagnosis and adverse effects in women. Studying both sexes is crucial, but incentives and funding structures often discourage researchers. Calls for cultural and structural changes in research and evaluation processes are needed to create a more equitable knowledge base.

Prominent health problems, socioeconomic deprivation, and higher brain age in lonely and isolated individuals: A population-based study

Ann-Marie G. de Lange et al.

Summary: Loneliness is associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease, and individuals who self-report loneliness tend to have higher levels of neuroticism, depression, social isolation, and socioeconomic deprivation, as well as lower physical activity and higher BMI. While loneliness shares a genetic overlap with neuroticism and depression, objective social isolation has a significant impact on brain age. Combining social isolation with a genetic predisposition for loneliness may pose a risk for adverse brain health.

Failure to demonstrate efficacy of aducanumab: An analysis of the EMERGE and ENGAGE trials as reported by Biogen, December 2019

David S. Knopman et al.

Summary: Aducanumab recently underwent two large phase III clinical trials that were stopped prematurely by the sponsor due to divergent outcomes. One trial showed potential benefits from high doses of Aducanumab, while the other did not show any benefits. Further analysis is needed to determine the true efficacy as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
