Uncovering the organization of neural circuits with Generalized Phase Locking Analysis

Shervin F. Safavi et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors introduce a method called GPLA, which helps neuroscientists uncover the distributed organization of neural networks. They develop statistical analysis and modeling methodologies for this measure and demonstrate its interpretability in simulated and experimental multi-electrode recordings. The study addresses the challenge of inferring the biophysical mechanisms underlying large scale coordination of brain activity from neural data.

Laminar microcircuitry of visual cortex producing attention-associated electric fields

Jacob A. Westerberg et al.

Summary: This study investigates the laminar cortical circuitry underlying attention-associated electric fields in the posterior regions of the brain. The findings suggest that the contribution of each cortical column to the attention-associated electric field depends on the column's feature selectivity. The laminar profile of synaptic activity in visual cortical area V4 is sufficient to produce an attention-associated signal measurable outside of the column.

Spontaneous Spiking Is Governed by Broadband Fluctuations

Zachary W. Davis et al.

Summary: Populations of cortical neurons generate rhythmic fluctuations in their ongoing spontaneous activity, which can be observed in the local field potential (LFP). The LFP reflects return currents from synaptic activity and is believed to contain narrowband oscillatory components with distinct functional roles. However, this study challenges this view and suggests that the phase of broadband LFP fluctuations provides a better predictor of spike timing than narrowband filtering.

Columnar processing of border ownership in primate visual cortex

Tom P. Franken et al.

Summary: The brain segregates objects from background in a visual scene by assigning borders to foreground objects. Research indicates that the computation of border ownership signals may rely more on internal feedback connections in the brain rather than direct feedforward transmission. Furthermore, the organization of cells within the visual cortex sheds light on how border ownership is computed.
