Community structure and recovery in cryptic intertidal communities reflects dynamics on open-surface communities

Alissa J. Rickborn et al.

Summary: Research on the intertidal community structure and recovery in the California Current System has focused mainly on easily accessible macrophytes and invertebrates on open rock surfaces. However, the cryptic communities in the three-dimensional structures on rocky shores have been poorly studied. In this research, we investigated the species abundance and diversity of the cryptic communities and their recovery from disturbance over a period of approximately 1.5 years. Our findings suggest that larger-scale environmental drivers are more influential than local-scale drivers in determining the community structure and recovery rates of the cryptic communities.

Increasing instability of a rocky intertidal meta-ecosystem

Bruce A. Menge et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a threat to the stability of ecosystems. In the rocky intertidal meta-ecosystem along the Oregon coast, signs of increasing destabilization have been observed over the past decade, possibly due to thermal disruptions and shifts in ocean currents.

Latitudinal variation in long-term stability of North American rocky intertidal communities

C. Melissa Miner et al.

Summary: This study examines the long-term stability of rocky intertidal communities along the west coast of North America using a multivariate similarity approach. It found an inverse relationship between community stability and elevated water temperatures, with lower stability in the south region. Community stability was linked to high species richness and low evenness at the site level.
