Biometeorological Conditions during the August 2015 Mega-Heat Wave and the Summer 2010 Mega-Heat Wave in Ukraine

Olga Shevchenko et al.

Summary: The human-biometeorological conditions during two mega-heat waves in Ukraine were analyzed using the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET). The results showed that these heat waves produced strenuous conditions, with the 2010 wave being more severe than the 2015 wave. There was a strong heat stress observed around midday in the regions affected by these atmospheric phenomena.

An experimental technique based on globe thermometers for the measurement of mean radiant temperature in urban settings

Alessia Banfi et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the possibility of using globe thermometers instead of net radiometers for evaluating T-mr in outdoor urban settings. The experimental comparison reveals that black globe thermometers tend to overestimate T-mr, while grey globe thermometers mainly underestimate it. Additionally, there is significant fluctuation in the profile of T-mr calculated using globe thermometers, attributed to the rapid variation of meteorological parameters and the long response time of the globes.

Small globes and pocket heat stress meters for WBGT and PHS evaluations. A critical analysis under controlled conditions

Francesca Romana d'Ambrosio Alfano et al.

Summary: This paper quantifies the effects of using small globes to assess extreme hot thermal environments. Results show that small globes underestimate WBGT values by 1°C, but this can be corrected using specific correction coefficients. However, pocket WBGT meters based on small globes and psychrometric sensors underestimate WBGT by more than 10°C, especially at low air velocity and high radiative loads. Additionally, the underestimation of mean radiant temperature measured through small globes leads to an underestimation of allowable exposure times predicted by the PHS model.

LONG-TERM ANALYSIS OF THERMAL COMFORT CONDITIONS DURING HEAT WAVES IN UKRAINE

Olga Shevchenko et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to assess the thermal comfort conditions during heat waves in Ukraine from 1961 to 2015. The study is based on the Physiologically Equivalent Temperature as a thermal index. Data from 29 meteorological stations across Ukraine were used. The research showed an increasing frequency of heat waves in Ukraine in recent decades, with the eastern and southern regions experiencing the most severe human-biometeorological conditions. The 2010 heat wave was found to be the longest and most severe since 1961.

Evaluation of Tourism-Climate Conditions in the Region of Klodzko Land (Poland)

Bartlomiej Miszuk

Summary: Klodzko Land is an important region in Poland for tourism and health, with weather conditions significantly impacting tourism activities and heat stress frequency increasing over the last decades. Cold stress weather types have decreased, with a rising trend in strong heat stress observed in all hypsometric zones. The most extreme heat stress conditions occur under specific atmospheric circulation patterns.
