Assessing performance of a nature-based foredune restoration project, Oceano Dunes, California, USA

Ian J. Walker et al.

Summary: The Oceano Dunes near Pismo Beach in California is a significant dune system that has faced issues of dust emissions due to vehicle activity. To address this, a nature-based foredune restoration strategy was implemented in 2020. After a 2-year study, it was found that all treatments resulted in net sediment accumulation, substantial development of nebkha dunes, and increased plant cover and species richness. Two treatments showed promising results for foredune development.

Small contributions of dust to PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations measured downwind of Oceano Dunes

Savannah L. Lewis et al.

Summary: The Oceano Dunes in California is a natural source of wind-driven dust emissions, primarily consisting of particulate matter (PM) with a particle size larger than 1 μm. To evaluate the impact of reducing PM emissions from the dune area on air quality, samples were collected during high-wind months from 2019 to 2021 to analyze the organic and elemental composition of PM10 and PM2.5. The results suggest that while the contribution of unidentified components from the dunes is relatively high, there is no evidence of toxic substances, indicating that current dust abatement strategies may not significantly improve downwind air quality.

Apportionment of Vehicle Fleet Emissions by Linear Regression, Positive Matrix Factorization, and Emission Modeling

Xiaoliang Wang et al.

Summary: This study applies four methods to derive emission factors for different vehicle types from tunnel measurements in Hong Kong, China and finds that PMF method is the most useful in determining source contributions. Diesel-fueled vehicles account for the highest proportion of PM2.5 mass emissions and EMFAC-HK method has the lowest relative uncertainties.

Simulation of flow and shear stress distribution on the Oceano Dunes, implications for saltation and dust emissions

E. Furtak-Cole et al.

Summary: In this study, wind-driven shear stresses over coastal sand dunes were investigated using computational fluid dynamics, field instrumentation, and high resolution topographic data. Sparse vegetation on the nebkha in the foredune was found to play a significant role in modulating surface shear and the initial boundary layer modification of onshore wind profiles.
