Contrasting changes in long-term wet mercury deposition and socioeconomic development in the largest city of Tibet

Jie Huang et al.

Summary: Our study in Lhasa showed no significant increase in wet mercury deposition over a 10-year period, despite rapid population and economic growth. The contrasting changes between wet mercury deposition and socioeconomic development can be attributed to efforts in controlling air pollution regionally and locally. In contrast, remote areas of the Tibetan Plateau have seen a rapid increase in mercury deposition, indicating the need for more attention to transboundary pollution in these cryospheric regions.

Field measurements on emission characteristics, chemical profiles, and emission factors of size-segregated PM from cement plants in China

Zhihui Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations, size distributions, and chemical compositions of size-segregated particulate matter (PM) from different outlets of cement plants in China. The results showed that the concentrations of PM in most samples were lower than the local emission standards. The chemical compositions of PM varied among different outlets, and the characteristics and emission factors of PM changed notably with stricter emission standards. The findings provide important information for updating and compiling emission inventories for cement production in China.

Rapid increase in atmospheric glyoxal and methylglyoxal concentrations in Lhasa, Tibetan Plateau: Potential sources and implications

Qinqin Li et al.

Summary: Glyoxal and methylglyoxal, intermediate products and precursors of volatile organic compounds in the Tibetan Plateau, may play key roles in photochemical pollution and regional climate change. Anthropogenic emissions are found to be the dominant sources of Gly and Mgly, while solar radiation contributes to their secondary formation. During ozone pollution episodes, local anthropogenic sources and emissions from the southern Himalayas make significant contributions to the levels of Gly and Mgly. This study has important implications for understanding the impact of human activities on air quality and climate change in this ecologically fragile area.

Temporal variation characteristics and source apportionment of metal elements in PM2.5 in urban Beijing during 2018-2019

Shuang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study conducted online monitoring of metal elements in PM2.5 with 1-h time resolution in Beijing from 22nd August 2018 to 21st August 2019 to explore high-resolution temporal variation characteristics and pollution sources. The results showed significant improvement in atmospheric metal pollution in Beijing, with main sources including soil and dust, vehicle non-exhaust emissions, biomass burning, etc., and different sources affecting the pollution in different seasons.
