The Effect of Sulfate Electrolytes on the Liquid-Liquid Equilibrium of 2-MTHF/Water/5-HMF: Experimental Study and Thermodynamic Modeling

Daniel Matthias Roth et al.

Summary: We studied the influence of sulfate salts and sulfuric acid on the equilibrium behavior of 2-MTHF/H2O/5-HMF. Liquid-liquid equilibrium measurements were conducted at atmospheric pressure and temperatures ranging from 293 to 333 K. The addition of Na2SO4 and Li2SO4 resulted in salting out of 2-MTHF and 5-HMF from the aqueous phase, while H2SO4 did not exhibit such behavior. The dissociation states of the salts were found to be different, with H2SO4 dissociating to HSO4- and Na2SO4 and Li2SO4 completely dissociating to SO42-. Parameter regression accurately predicted the measurements for Na2SO4 and Li2SO4, but slight deviations were observed for sulfuric acid.

Electrified hydrocarbon-to-oxygenates coupled to hydrogen evolution for efficient greenhouse gas mitigation

Wan Ru Leow et al.

Summary: The production of hydrogen and hydrocarbon refining contribute significantly to CO2 emissions in the chemicals industry. Coupled electrification can cut emissions by up to 39%, even with the current electricity mix. Chemicals manufacturing is a major greenhouse gas emitter, with over half of the emissions coming from ammonia and oxygenates. By using electrolyzer systems that convert hydrocarbons to oxygenates and generate H-2 from water, emissions from fossil-based ammonia and oxygenates can be reduced by up to 88%. Low-carbon electricity is not necessary for a substantial reduction in global chemical industry emissions, as a 39% reduction can be achieved with the electricity carbon footprint available in the US or China today. Researchers interested in this area are provided with considerations and recommendations.

Techno-Economic Analysis of FDCA Production through Electrocatalytic Processes

Maria Chiara Massaro et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the electrochemical production process of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from lignocellulosic biomass and evaluates its feasibility through techno-economic analysis. The study finds that the process is currently not feasible on an industrial scale due to high costs, large consumption of acidic and basic substances, and low process yield.

Technoeconomic and Life-Cycle Assessment for Electrocatalytic Production of Furandicarboxylic Acid

Poojan Patel et al.

Summary: This study assesses the economic aspects and environmental impacts of the electrochemical production of FDCA. It is found that the electrochemical method shows potential in terms of both economics and environmental impact, and further improvements can be made by reducing the environmental impact of HMF production. However, there is still a need to lower the current density to improve the process economics.

Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emission plastics by a circular carbon economy

Raoul Meys et al.

Summary: Achieving net-zero emission plastics can be done by combining biomass and CO2 utilization with increased recycling rates, which can save a significant amount of energy. To realize the potential cost savings, it is important to lower production costs, incentivize large-scale recycling, and reduce investment barriers for technologies using renewable carbon feedstock.

Development of High-Molecular-Weight Fully Renewable Biopolyesters Based on Oxabicyclic Diacid and 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid: Promising as Packaging and Medical Materials

Haiyan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, three series of oxabicyclic renewable polyesters were synthesized via melt polymerization, with fully bio-based copolyesters obtained by incremental replacement of OBDA with FDCA. The resulting polyesters exhibited higher molecular weights, thermal stabilities, and gas barrier properties, with Tg values and biocompatibility comparable to commercial medical materials. The strategy of incorporating FDCA building blocks improved the comprehensive properties of the linear polyesters with oxabicyclic units and could be leveraged to control their roles in packaging and biomedical fields while maintaining their completely renewable nature.
