Biodegradable chitosan-graphene oxide as an affective green filler for improving of properties in epoxy nanocomposites

Mehdi Sharif et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of biodegradable Chitosan-encapsulated Graphene Oxide (CGO) on the morphology and properties of epoxy composites was investigated. Various analytical techniques were used to examine the microstructure and properties of chitosan-GO and composites. Results showed that the distribution of fillers in the epoxy matrix was influenced by the CGO composition and its content. The strength of epoxy/CGOs composites was mainly affected by the loading level of CGO and the ratio of chitosan to GO, with nanocomposites containing CGO exhibiting a significant increase in elastic modulus and Tg of the composite.

N. C. Nepomuceno et al.

Summary: In this study, compounds based on epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) were developed using salicylic acid (SAL) and 1, 3, and 5 wt% of chitosan (CHT). The chemical structures and curing mechanisms were evaluated using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermal curing in the absence of catalyst was observed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The obtained bio-resins exhibited high reactivity and reactions enthalpy at low CHT content (1% and 3%), and were characterized by their water uptake, swelling ratio, crosslink density, and thermal stability, indicating their potential applications in curatives or composite materials.

Collagen-chitosan-hydroxyapatite composite scaffolds for bone repair in ovariectomized rats

Erivelto Luis Chacon et al.

Summary: Lesions with bone loss may require autologous grafts or biomaterials for bone neoformation support. In this study, collagen/chitosan/hydroxyapatite scaffolds were used to investigate the osteoregenerative capacity in rats with hormone deficiency caused by ovariectomy. The results showed that the scaffolds stimulated bone growth, but the abnormal conditions of bone fragility caused by gonadal hormone deficiency may have delayed the bone repair process.

Metal ions and nanometallic materials in antitumor immunity: Function, application, and perspective

Feiyang Shen et al.

Summary: Even slight changes in the concentrations of metal ions can have amplified effects on signaling cascades that regulate tumor microenvironment and immune status, ultimately influencing the network of antitumor immunity. Metal ions are widely used in antitumor therapy as immune modulators due to their influence on cancer cell fate and participation in innate and adaptive immunity. Nanomedicine, with its precise delivery and responsive release capabilities, provides an ideal platform for the application of metal ions in cancer treatment, overcoming the disadvantages of low target selectivity and systemic toxicity.

Effects of molecular weight of chitosan in a blend with polycaprolactone and grapefruit seed extract for active packaging and biodegradation

Berlinda Kwee Hong Lim et al.

Summary: Packaging films were developed by blending polycaprolactone (PCL) with chitosan as carrier for grapefruit seed extract (GSE). The use of lower molecular weight (MW) chitosan accelerated the release of GSE, improving plasticization, hydrophilicity, and inhibition of the growth of Escherichia coli. Biodegradation of the films in soil compost showed that films with lower MW chitosan exhibited faster rates of degradation, while the decline in molecular weight was similar among all blended films. The formulation of PCL/GSE using lower MW chitosan shows promise in enhancing biodegradation and antimicrobial efficacy of packaging films.
