Understanding the Long-Term Evolution of Mobile App Usage

Tong Li et al.

Summary: The prevalence of smartphones has led to the popularity of mobile apps in recent years. However, existing studies on mobile app usage are mainly based on short-term datasets, limiting our understanding of the long-term evolution of app usage. In this study, we analyze app usage records from 1,465 users collected from 2012 to 2017 and examine the evolution processes at both the macro and micro levels. We discover growth and plateau stages in app-category and individual app usage, as well as an elimination stage in individual app usage due to competition. The diversity of app-category usage assimilates while individual app usage diversifies over time.

A Multi-Modal Neural Embeddings Approach for Detecting Mobile Counterfeit Apps: A Case Study on Google Play Store

Naveen Karunanayake et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method of using deep learning techniques to identify counterfeit apps by combining content, style, and text embeddings, which has successfully increased accuracy and recall rates. An analysis of approximately 1.2 million apps from Google Play Store revealed a large number of potential counterfeit apps, which may contain malware or request excessive permissions.

Predicting personality from patterns of behavior collected with smartphones

Clemens Stachl et al.

Summary: This study examined the predictive ability of behavioral information collected from smartphones on individuals' Big Five personality traits, finding that specific behavioral patterns can predict personality traits. The accuracy of these predictions is similar to those based on digital footprints from social media, showing the potential of passively collecting behavioral patterns from smartphones to obtain information about individuals' private traits.
