Assessing the Baseline Uranium in Groundwater around a Proposed Uraninite Mine and Identification of a Nearby New Reserve

Ravinder Bhavya et al.

Summary: The presence of uranium in groundwater is a global concern, especially in mineralized regions where mining activities can worsen water quality. This study aims to assess the concentration of uranium in groundwater at a proposed uraninite mining site in Gogi, Karnataka, India. Groundwater samples collected from 52 wells in the area showed uranium concentrations ranging from 1.5 ppb to 267 ppb. About 25% of wells within 20 km from the mineralized region exceeded the recommended limits for uranium in drinking water. This study serves as a baseline for future assessment of mining impacts and suggests caution in using groundwater from wells with high uranium concentrations.

Ant-Inspired Metaheuristic Algorithms for Combinatorial Optimization Problems in Water Resources Management

Ravinder Bhavya et al.

Summary: Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms, inspired by the behavior of ants, are effective in solving complex problems in various domains, including water resources management. This study critically reviews the applications of ACO in hydrology and hydrogeology, such as reservoir operations, water distribution systems, and urban drainage design. Hybrid and modified ACO techniques are found to be more efficient than traditional ACO algorithms in terms of solution quality and cost efficiency. However, challenges remain in incorporating uncertainty and addressing issues of dimensionality, convergence, and stability. Further research is needed to explore the potential of ACO in these areas.

Use of the water quality index and multivariate analysis to assess groundwater quality for drinking purpose in Ratnapura district, Sri Lanka

R. C. Karangoda et al.

Summary: Groundwater is an important freshwater resource for communities in many countries, including Sri Lanka, but its quality is deteriorating due to anthropogenic and natural factors. This study assessed the groundwater quality in Ratnapura district and found significant deterioration in the eastern and south-eastern areas. The study also revealed differences in groundwater quality between the wet zone and the dry zone, with increased mineralization in the latter. The findings have implications for future hydrogeological research and water management in the area.

Modeling cation exchange capacity in gypsiferous soils using hybrid approach involving the artificial neural networks and ant colony optimization (ANN-ACO)

Shiva Nazari et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the estimation of cation exchange capacity (CEC) in gypsiferous soil using a hybrid approach involving artificial neural networks and ant colony optimization. The study analyzes the contribution of different soil variables and finds that clay and organic matter are the main factors affecting CEC. The ANN-ACO model with 2I + 1 optimal neurons in a hidden layer is found to yield superior results compared to other models. This study provides a novel approach to estimate CEC in gypsiferous soil and offers insights for soil classification and management.

Groundwater quality forecasting modelling using artificial intelligence: A review

Nur Farahin Che Nordin et al.

Summary: This review paper closely examines the techniques and importance of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches in groundwater quality modelling and forecasting, with a focus on domestic usage suitability. It systematically reviews four commonly used AI methods: artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), evolutionary algorithm (EA) and support vector machine (SVM) to identify the features, capabilities, and challenges in achieving desired results. The findings highlight that successful AI model adoption relies on factors such as input consideration, function types, and performance metrics, with recommendations provided for further knowledge development in groundwater quality modelling.
