The global research trend on cadmium in freshwater: a bibliometric review

Muhammad Irfan et al.

Summary: This study conducted a quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analysis on cadmium pollution research, highlighting the contributions of China, the USA, and India. The main sources of cadmium are mining, industry, wastewater, sedimentation, and agricultural activities. In developing countries, people are mainly exposed to cadmium through air, freshwater, and food.

Potentially hazardous elements in sediments and Ceratophyllum demersum: an ecotoxicological risk assessment in Milic Wetland, Samsun, Turkiye

Halim Topaldemir et al.

Summary: Potentially hazardous elements accumulate in the wetlands in Turkiye, including the Milic Wetland. However, the levels of PHE accumulation in the sediments and Ceratophyllum demersum in the Milic Wetland are relatively low, posing no major health risks. It is recommended to prevent agricultural pesticides and fertilizers from entering the wetland and consider using Ceratophyllum demersum for wetland remediation.

Algae as biosorption agents for recovering environments contaminated by trace metals: an overview of a potentially useful tool for mine disasters in Brazil

Liberio Junio da Silva et al.

Summary: Mining activities are a significant source of metal pollutants in freshwater systems. The use of low-cost materials, such as algae, for the removal of trace metals is an efficient and promising approach. The recent environmental disasters caused by mining dam collapses in Brazil have increased interest in using algae as a low-cost alternative for recovering impacted areas. Algae demonstrate species-specific interactions with metals and have been proven to be highly efficient in biosorption of trace metals in heavily impacted aquatic environments.

Evaluation of metal accumulation in Terme River sediments using ecological indices and a bioindicator species

Fikret Ustaoglu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed sediment samples from Terme River and found that the metals in the samples were mainly of natural origin, with cadmium and copper being influenced by human activities. The assessment indicated low ecological and human health risks in the region, and Myriophyllum spicatum was identified as a potential bioindicator.

Evaluation of Nuphar lutea as bioindicator of metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems

Ludmila Polechonska et al.

Summary: Macrophytes have the ability to absorb elements from water and sediment and certain species can be used as bioindicators of pollution. This study investigated the uptake of 12 metals by Nuphar lutea from various water bodies to assess its bioaccumulation potential and suitability as a pollution indicator. The results showed higher pollution levels in urban and agricultural areas compared to forest areas, with variations in metal concentrations in leaves based on the source of metal exposure. The study suggests that leaves of N. lutea can be used as an indicator of pollution in water bodies.

Heavy metals in lake surface sediments in protected areas in Poland: concentration, pollution, ecological risk, sources and spatial distribution

Mariusz Sojka et al.

Summary: This paper presents the state and spatial distribution of surface sediment contamination by Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu in 77 lakes in Poland. The results indicate the contamination of lake sediments by heavy metals, but the potentially toxic effects are only found in single lakes. The spatial distribution of different metals varies, with Cr predominantly impacted by point sources and Pb, Ni, and Zn impacted by non-point sources. The analysis also reveals the presence of high concentration hot spots in the western part of Poland and low concentration cold spots in the central part. The presence of wetlands and higher proportions of national parks and nature reserves are found to limit the inflow of heavy metals into lakes.

Metals in Lake Sediments as Indicators of Human Activities in Prehistory: Case Study of the Southeastern Baltic, Kamyshovoe Lake

Olga Druzhinina et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of geochemical research on the sediment of Kamyshovoe Lake, revealing possible anthropogenic sources of metals from the Neolithic to the Medieval period. The study shows that the role and usage of metals increased over time in the southeastern Baltic region, indicating a growing demand for metal objects.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment and source identification of heavy metals in the surface sediments of comlekci stream, Giresun, Turkey

Fikret Ustaoglu

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the heavy metal contamination in sediments of comlekci stream and the associated environmental risks. Through sample collection, ICP-MS analysis, and statistical methods, the sources and relationships of different heavy metals in the sediments were identified. Calculations indicated limited contamination by Cu, Pb, and Zn in sediments, with no environmental risk for aquatic biota and no carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic hazards to human health from heavy metals.

Trace elements in aquatic environment. Origin, distribution, assessment and toxicity effect for the aquatic biota

Nikola Kolarova et al.

Summary: This article discusses the effects of trace element contamination in bottom sediments on the environment and aquatic biota, highlighting the risks they pose to ecosystems and the harmful effects of common trace elements such as Chromium, Arsenic, Mercury, Cadmium, and Copper on living organisms. The article also summarizes new methods for eliminating and evaluating the impact of these trace elements on aquatic organisms, emphasizing the importance of bioassay as a preferred method for analyzing trace element concentrations in aquatic bottom sediments.
