Manganese oxide-modified biochar: production, characterization and applications for the removal of pollutants from aqueous environments a review

Sabry M. Shaheen et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the development and use of manganese oxide modified biochar (MnOBC) for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water. The preparation and characterization of MnOBC, as well as its capacity for pollutant removal, are explored in relation to various factors. The review also examines the mechanisms of pollutant removal by MnOBC and the fate of sorbed pollutants. The impregnation of biochar with MnOx enhances its sorption capacity, making it an effective biosorbent for remediation of contaminated water environments.

Legacy phosphorus in calcareous soil under 33 years of P fertilizer application: Implications for efficient P management in agriculture

Licun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term application of phosphorus fertilizer significantly increased soil legacy P content, and a large portion of the applied P remained in labile and moderately labile forms. Principal component analysis could distinguish between cropland and uncultivated land, indicating that long-term application of phosphorus fertilizer changed soil P characteristics.

Microbial inoculants and struvite improved organic matter humification and stabilized phosphorus during swine manure composting: Multivariate and multiscale investigations

Huanhuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of microbial inoculants and magnesium ammonium phosphate on the stability of organic matter and phosphorus species during swine manure composting. The results showed that microbial inoculants promoted the degradation of carbohydrates and aliphatic compounds, while magnesium ammonium phosphate promoted the redistribution of phosphorus fractions and species. Therefore, microbial inoculants can be recommended for enhancing the biodegradation of organic matter and the stabilization of phosphorus during biowaste composting.

Investigation of differential levels of phosphorus fixation in dolomite and calcium carbonate amended red soil

Bingqian Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that using dolomite to amend red soil can significantly increase the availability of phosphorus in soil, thereby reducing phosphorus fixation. Dolomite treatment led to a significant increase in HCl-P (stable Ca-P), while the presence of magnesium (Mg) in dolomite suppressed the formation of stable P.

The effectiveness of reed-biochar in mitigating phosphorus losses and enhancing microbially-driven phosphorus dynamics in paddy soil

Yizhe Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that adding 1-4% reed-biochar can reduce phosphorus loss and increase phosphorus availability in paddy soils. The abundance of phoD gene-harboring microbes increases with reed-biochar application, but it is not related to the application rate. Soil phoD-harboring community composition and total C content are the main predictors of phosphorus leaching losses.

Assessment of catalytic thermal hydrolysis of swine manure slurry as liquid fertilizer: Insights into nutrients and metals

Shiyu Xie et al.

Summary: This study examined the characteristics of organic matter conversion, nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals release during the catalytic-thermal hydrolysis (TH) process using swine manure slurry. The addition of HCl and H2O2 promoted organic matter hydrolysis, resulting in the best nitrogen and phosphorus release performance. Structural equation modeling study showed that the release characteristics of nutrients and metals from the TH process were significantly affected by the addition of HCl and H2O2. Data analysis demonstrated that the liquid fertilizer produced by TH did not exceed the environmental risk associated with nutrients or the ecological risk associated with heavy metals.

Flooding and straw returning regulates the partitioning of soil phosphorus fractions and phoD-harboring bacterial community in paddy soils

Qi Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that continuous flooding increased soil citrate-P and decreased HCl-P fractions, transferring stable inorganic P pools to labile inorganic P. Straw return significantly increased labile organic fractions and enzyme activity, as well as the abundance of phoD-harboring bacteria. Flooding was found to be a more effective agricultural practice than straw returning in promoting soil P availability.

Fe/Al (hydr)oxides engineered biochar for reducing phosphorus leaching from a fertile calcareous soil

Yutao Peng et al.

Summary: The study developed an Fe/Al (hydr)oxides modified biochar (FA-BC) to reduce P leaching in calcareous soils, demonstrating its higher efficiency in P adsorption compared to raw biochar. The application of FA-BC significantly decreased total P leaching, while maintaining adequate levels of bioavailable P in the soil. Chemical sequestration tests and analyses further showed the transformation of labile Ca-P fractions into stabilized Fe/Al-P complexes, highlighting the superior P retention ability of FA-BC amended soils.

Changes in degree of phosphorus saturation and risk of P loss upon twelve years of manuring and reduced tillage

Satya Narayana Pradhan et al.

Summary: The adoption of minimum tillage and application of fertilizer integrated with farmyard manure in rice-based cropping systems in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India has been proposed for sustainability. An experiment over twelve years showed that reduced tillage intensity and organic fertilization increased all P fractions and soluble P, affecting the soil's P saturation and adsorption capacity. Olsen P, used as an index of P availability, was closely associated with all P fractions and degree of P saturation, highlighting the importance of proper management practices to avoid P losses to the environment.

Summary: This study found that reducing conditions in highly acidic soil lead to increased dissolution of P due to Fe reduction and Mn dissolution. The decrease of Fe-P fraction and Ferrihydrite-Pads, as well as the correlation between dissolved P and Fe2+, support the conclusion of redox-induced P mobilization under anoxic conditions in highly acidic soils.

Christoph Weihrauch et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the risk of phosphorus (P) loss from soil to reduce the impact of freshwater eutrophication. Comparison of different environmental indicators revealed that riparian buffer zone (RBZ) soils are temporary sinks or sources of phosphorus. Four aspects to be considered include spatial and temporal heterogeneity, dynamics of individual P fractions, and adequacy of threshold values.

Excessive application of chemical fertilizer and organophosphorus pesticides induced total phosphorus loss from planting causing surface water eutrophication

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides are the main factors influencing TP loss, while annual precipitation and relative humidity can increase TP loss. TP loss in Qinghai and Shandong provinces was significant, and correlated with TP concentration in surface water. Recommendations to reduce TP loss include promoting scientific fertilization technologies, restricting organophosphorus pesticides, and popularizing water-saving irrigation technologies.
