Water Resources in Africa under Global Change: Monitoring Surface Waters from Space

Fabrice Papa et al.

Summary: The African continent hosts some of the largest freshwater systems worldwide, and its hydrology has been less studied. Remote sensing technology plays a crucial role in monitoring and managing Africa's water resources, with future satellite missions offering more opportunities.

Satellites reveal hotspots of global river extent change

Qianhan Wu et al.

Summary: By analyzing Landsat imagery, the authors found that recent changes in river regime are attributed to morphological dynamics, dam-induced widening, and hydrological signals. Morphological dynamics dominate in approximately 20% of global river area. Reservoir constructions in Asia and South America contribute to about 32% of river widening. The remaining hydrological signals show contrasting patterns, with prominent river widening in alpine and pan-Arctic regions and narrowing in the arid/semi-arid continental interiors, driven by varying trends in climate forcing, cryospheric response to warming, and human water management.

Stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production for better watershed management with the Freshwater Health Index

Maira Ometto Bezerra et al.

Summary: Sustainable watershed management requires effective stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production. Currently, most methods for stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production in the field are case-specific, applied in an ad hoc manner, and not tested across various spatial scales or water management contexts. Moreover, these methods are not often evaluated, limiting our ability to learn from and adapt them. We critically assess the Freshwater Health Index (FHI), an indicator-based platform for stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production, which has been applied in a variety of social-ecological systems.

Generation mechanisms of the water surface elevation induced by a moving atmospheric pressure disturbance

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically studies the surface elevation induced by a moving APD, and confirms that it consists of three components: the initial surface elevation, the initial vibration trend, and the external force. The surface elevation induced by the initial value or initial vibration trend is composed of two waves propagating with the shallow water wave speed. Meanwhile, the external force produces two small waves propagating backward and forward, and the surface elevation is the superposition of these two waves. Contributions from these three factors to the total surface elevation are specified, with the initial surface elevation playing a significant role at the beginning and the external force showing an opposite trend along the APD center.

The Kere of Madagascar: a qualitative exploration of community experiences and perspectives

Maixent I. Ralaingita et al.

Summary: This research explores the impact of the Kere phenomenon on two affected communities in southern Madagascar using qualitative research methods. By understanding the perspectives and experiences of the affected people, the study reveals that the Kere is a complex disaster compounded by multiple interacting factors, requiring comprehensive, sustained, holistic solutions.

Forest regeneration can positively contribute to local hydrological ecosystem services: Implications for forest landscape restoration

H. J. (Ilja) van Meerveld et al.

Summary: Governments are increasingly investing in forest restoration for carbon sequestration and community benefits. However, the impacts of forest restoration on local hydrological services are poorly understood. Research shows that regenerating tropical forest vegetation can positively contribute to locally important hydrological ecosystem services.

Estimating Baseflow and Baseflow Index in Ungauged Basins Using Spatial Interpolation Techniques: A Case Study of the Southern River Basin of Thailand

Pakorn Ditthakit et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate baseflow and baseflow index in ungauged basins in southern Thailand using three spatial interpolation methods and comparing their performance. The findings showed that the EF method generally yielded lower values compared to the LM method, with IDW performing the best among the three interpolation techniques. Monthly and annual BF and BFI maps were also provided for water resource management purposes.

Regional Patterns and Physical Controls of Streamflow Generation Across the Conterminous United States

Shuyue Wu et al.

Summary: This study identifies regional patterns of dominant streamflow generation mechanisms across the conterminous United States by analyzing continuous rainfall-streamflow time series data. The study classifies catchments into eight classes based on six signatures and determines the climatic and physiographic controls on the dominant streamflow generation mechanisms. The study highlights climate aridity, median event rainfall volume, topographic slope, soil permeability, rock type, and vegetation density as the main controlling factors for streamflow generation mechanisms.
