Improvement and application of qPCR assay revealed new insight on early warning of Phaeocystis globosa bloom

Jiale Wang et al.

Summary: An accurate, sensitive, and specific qPCR assay was developed to quantify solitary cells and provide early warning of P. globosa blooms. The observation of a plunge in solitary-cell abundance before the bloom outbreak reveals a unique pattern and suggests the formation of non-solitary attached aggregates as a precursor to colony formation.

Monitoring, modeling and projection of harmful algal blooms in China

Weibing Guan et al.

Summary: This review assesses the monitoring, modeling, and projection of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in China, focusing on near-term warning and long-term trend projection. It highlights the advancements in traditional observation capability, development of remote sensing algorithms, and successful application of numerical models in simulating and predicting HAB events. The study also emphasizes the necessity of an integrated monitoring and early-warning system for effective management and mitigation of HAB damages in China.

Reduced forms of nitrogen control the spatial distribution of phytoplankton communities: The functional winner, dinoflagellates in an anthropogenically polluted estuary

Vitor Heidrich

Summary: This study investigated the effects of reduced forms of nitrogen on the spatial distribution of diatoms and dinoflagellates in an estuarine-coastal water continuum. The results showed that diatoms dominated in NO3-replete water, while dinoflagellates took over in an anthropogenically polluted estuary.

Bait input altered microbial community structure and increased greenhouse gases production in coastal wetland sediment

Genmei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of bait input on sediment microbial community, greenhouse gas (GHG) production, and physicochemical properties. The results showed that bait input significantly affected dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and various sediment properties. Additionally, bait input led to changes in microbial community composition and increased GHG production. These findings highlight the importance of coastal aquaculture in global GHG emissions.

Mixotrophic plankton foraging behaviour linked to carbon export

Natalie R. Cohen

Summary: Marine mixotrophic protists with the ability to utilize heterotrophic and phototrophic metabolisms can affect the carbon cycle in unexpected ways. A recently discovered mixotroph can create three-dimensional mucilage feeding structures to trap nutrient-rich plankton prey, contributing to the sinking of carbon from the surface ocean.

Long-Term Harmful Algal Blooms and Nutrients Patterns Affected by Climate Change and Anthropogenic Pressures in the Zhanjiang Bay, China

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Climate change and anthropogenic pressures have significantly impacted coastal environments, including Zhanjiang Bay, which has experienced increased eutrophication and harmful algal blooms (HABs). Nutrient patterns have changed over the past 30 years, resulting in a shift from a phosphorus-limited oligotrophic state to a nitrogen-limited eutrophic state. Integrated land-ocean environment management is needed to mitigate pollution sources and control HABs.

Effects of Algal Blooms on Phytoplankton Composition and Hypoxia in Coastal Waters of the Northern Yellow Sea, China

Xiaohong Sun et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that there are occurrences of summer hypoxia and harmful algal blooms in the nearshore of the northern Yellow Sea, with diatoms and dinoflagellates as the dominant groups. A diatom blooming event in March shifted to dinoflagellate dominance throughout the summer but changed back to diatom dominance in September. Hypoxic zones were observed in the bottom water in August, with a clear association with a diatom blooming event in March.

Changes in dissolved organic pool and regulation of associated nutrients during green tides: A case study of Ulva prolifera bloom in the southern Yellow Sea

Bing-Han Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial and temporal distributions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) affected by Ulva prolifera bloom and the regulation of DOM released by nitrate nutrients. The bloom led to increased concentrations of DOM and affected the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Total dissolved carbohydrates (TCHO), monosaccharides (MCHO), and polysaccharides (PCHO) reached peak values during the late bloom, indicating DOM release. However, CDOM and total dissolved amino acids (TDAA) concentrations declined during the late bloom, suggesting regulation by the bloom and other mechanisms. The mesocosm experiment confirmed these findings and showed that nitrate addition improved DOM production, but had varying effects on different types of dissolved organic matter.

Nitrogen cycling processes in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary: Spatial variations, controlling factors, and environmental implications

Fangjuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microbial nitrogen cycling processes in surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary, revealing higher rates and gene abundance in the outer estuary. Denitrification was found to be the dominant pathway contributing to nitrate reduction in the study area, suggesting the sediment's significant role in mitigating and controlling nitrogen pollution. The study also highlights the complexity of nitrogen cycling processes in controlling the N budget in the Pearl River Estuary and improving the understanding of these processes in estuarine and coastal ecosystems.

Harmful Algal Blooms in Chinese Coastal Waters Will Persist Due to Perturbed Nutrient Ratios

Junjie Wang et al.

Summary: The three large marine ecosystems bordering China have been receiving excessive nitrogen and phosphorus inputs in the past decades, leading to the proliferation of harmful algal blooms. Future projections suggest that high nitrogen-phosphorus ratios will persist for decades, potentially worsening the situation.

Coastal eutrophication in China: Trend, sources, and ecological effects

Yujue Wang et al.

Summary: Excess nutrient inputs have led to widespread coastal eutrophication globally, with Chinese coastal waters experiencing a eutrophic process due to rapid economic development. Key trends include increased nitrogen and phosphorus inputs, changes in nutrient composition and stoichiometry, and the resulting increase in harmful algal blooms. Targeted research on nitrogen reduction, adaptation strategies, and the consequences for ecosystems and economic sustainability is needed to address the ongoing issue.

Distribution and Sources of Particulate Organic Matter in the Northern South China Sea: Implications of Human Activity

Huang Chao et al.

Summary: The study found that the suspended particulate organic matter in the northern South China Sea is mainly influenced by marine organic matter, terrestrial inputs, and freshwater algae, with nearshore stations being primarily sourced from eutrophic areas, microbial activities, and heterotrophic modifications. The distribution patterns of delta C-13 and delta N-15 suggest a complex interplay of factors, including human activities along the coast.
