Improving the Resolution of GRACE/InSAR Groundwater Storage Estimations Using a New Subsidence Feature Weighted Combination Scheme

Qingqing Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a New Subsidence Feature Weighted Combination (NSFWC) scheme to enhance the spatial resolution of GRACE-derived Groundwater Storage Anomalies (GWSA). The NSFWC method retains the spatial distribution of groundwater changes and reflects local details related to surface subsidence. A case study in the Beijing Plain showed that the simulated GWSA were consistent with in situ measurements in most regions, with a correlation coefficient of 0.85 and an RMSE of 4.41 mm/year. This research provides data support and technical guarantees for small-scale groundwater resources management.

Buffering the impacts of extreme climate variability in the highly engineered Tigris Euphrates river system

Karem Abdelmohsen et al.

Summary: Global warming-induced extreme floods and droughts are affecting the livelihood of populations worldwide, but highly engineered systems like reservoirs are effective in managing these extreme climatic variabilities. A case study of the Tigris-Euphrates Watershed showed the potential of dam reservoirs in recovering from drought years.

Evaluating Groundwater Storage Change and Recharge Using GRACE Data: A Case Study of Aquifers in Niger, West Africa

Sergio A. Barbosa et al.

Summary: This study investigates groundwater storage changes and recharge in Southern Niger using data from the NASA GRACE mission. The findings show that there is little change in groundwater storage from 2002-2010, but a steep rise from 2010-2021, which can be attributed to increased precipitation. The research demonstrates that groundwater resources in Niger are not being overutilized and could be further developed for beneficial use.

Monitoring and Mapping of Soil Salinity on the Exposed Seabed of the Aral Sea, Central Asia

Zihao Duan et al.

Summary: The drying of the Aral Sea has led to high soil salinity on the exposed seabed, causing catastrophic consequences. This study investigated soil salinity data and used satellite imagery to map the soil salinity distribution. The results showed a significant correlation between topsoil salinity and the SI4 index, which was used to predict the soil salinity distribution. The study also found that soil salinity has increased over time.

A New Spatiotemporal Estimator to Downscale GRACE Gravity Models for Terrestrial and Groundwater Storage Variations Estimation

Farzam Fatolazadeh et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new mathematical approach to downscale monthly terrestrial water storage anomalies from GRACE and estimates groundwater storage anomalies at a daily temporal resolution and a spatial resolution of 0.25 degrees x 0.25 degrees. The method combines GRACE gravity models and hydrological model outputs to enhance the quality of the estimated TWSA and GWSA. The results show significant correlations and low errors in the estimated GWSA compared to in-situ wells.

Bridging the Data Gap between the GRACE Missions and Assessment of Groundwater Storage Variations for Telangana State, India

Kuruva Satish Kumar et al.

Summary: Uneven distribution of rainfall in India has led to increased reliance on groundwater for irrigation. Researchers have used satellite-based remote sensing information to study groundwater variations. The study focuses on the state of Telangana in India and provides valuable insights into groundwater storage anomalies.

Mass Variations in Terrestrial Water Storage over the Nile River Basin and Mega Aquifer System as Deduced from GRACE-FO Level-2 Products and Precipitation Patterns from GPCP Data

Basem Elsaka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water mass variations in the Nile River Basin in Africa and the Mega Aquifer System in Asia using GRACE-FO data. The results show significant temporal variations in water storage in the Nile River Basin, while the Mega Aquifer System has relatively smaller variations, which are attributed to differences in precipitation intensity.

The Drought Events over the Amazon River Basin from 2003 to 2020 Detected by GRACE/GRACE-FO and Swarm Satellites

Lilu Cui et al.

Summary: This study focused on the climate anomaly in the Amazon River basin and its influence on global climate change. To fill the data gap between GRACE and GRACE-FO missions, the researchers fused TWSC results from multiple GRACE solutions and combined Swarm data to construct a continuous drought index. The results showed strong correlations between the drought index and other drought indices, indicating that precipitation is the main cause of drought events in the Amazon River basin.

Spatiotemporal Downscaling of GRACE Total Water Storage Using Land Surface Model Outputs

Detang Zhong et al.

Summary: High spatiotemporal resolution of terrestrial total water storage is crucial for assessing water resource trends and availability. This study introduces a two-step method to downscale GRACE TWSA from its original coarse resolution to a higher resolution, showing reduced uncertainty and certain level of agreement with in-situ groundwater monitoring well observations.

Alexandra Gemitzi et al.

Summary: A downscaling framework for GRACE Total Water Storage Anomaly data was developed using precipitation observations from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission. The study found that downscaled GRACE observations were comparable to TWSA estimates from hydrological modeling, indicating the potential of GRACE data in improving hydrological model performance.

Drought Events over the Amazon River Basin (1993-2019) as Detected by the Climate-Driven Total Water Storage Change

Kunjun Tian et al.

Summary: This study extended GRACE total water storage change data to 1993 using a combination of methods, and used climate variables to interpret drought patterns over the Amazon basin. The results showed that the climate-driven TWSC data were consistent with other drought indices, and indicated similar drought patterns during the 1998 and 2016 drought events in the Amazon, both induced by strong El Nino events.
