Succession of microbial communities reveals the inevitability of anammox core in the development of anammox processes

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the introduction of different sludge communities as seeds has a significant impact on the growth of anammox bacteria, and sludge communities dominated by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria are the closest to the anammox core and achieve the highest nitrogen removal efficiency. The results of this study provide a solution to the shortage of anammox seeds in full-scale wastewater treatment applications.

Microbial community and metabolic characteristics evaluation in start-up stage of electro-enhanced SBR for aniline wastewater treatment

Jiapeng Feng et al.

Summary: An electro-enhanced sequencing batch reactor (E-SBR) was used to treat aniline wastewater efficiently and achieved high nitrogen removal rate. The microbial community in E-SBR changed significantly, with the enrichment of functional microorganisms that played a crucial role in pollutant removal. The metabolism of microorganisms in E-SBR system was different from that in traditional SBR system.

A2O-MBR-BAF-O3 process for treating high organic wastewater with high ammonia nitrogen

Likun Huang et al.

Summary: In recent years, many wastewater treatment plants in China have been upgraded and reconstructed due to the improvement of emission standards. This paper proposes a novel process, the A(2)O-MBR-BAF-O-3 process, which can degrade COD, NH4+-N, TN, and chroma simultaneously. The experimental results show that this process can effectively remove these pollutants, and the effluent quality meets the national standards.

Nitrogen removal intensification of aerobic granular sludge through bioaugmentation with heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification consortium during petroleum wastewater treatment

Qinghong Wang et al.

Summary: The bioaugmentation potential of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was explored for improved nitrogen removal in petroleum wastewater treatment. A highly efficient heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacterial consortium was constructed and used to bioaugment the AGS, resulting in enhanced nitrogen removal. The addition of the immobilized consortium facilitated the formation of larger AGS particles and increased the gene abundance related to heterotrophic nitrification.

Robust Nitritation Sustained by Acid-Tolerant Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria

Zhiyao Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a robust nitritation process in treating low-strength wastewater by cultivating acid-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) under acidic conditions of pH 4.5-5.0. The dominance of Candidatus Nitrosoglobus in the nitrifying guild was identified through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, with the disappearance of typical activated sludge nitrifying microorganisms. The acid-tolerant Candidatus Nitrosoglobus was found to accumulate nitrite effectively under conditions inhibiting nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), leading to a stable and practical nitrogen removal process.
