Advanced oxidation processes for the removal of mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - A review

Manoj P. Rayaroth et al.

Summary: Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) are toxic contaminants found in various environmental matrices, and this paper reviews advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for their removal and complete mineralization. A comparative study shows that the oxidation of AHs depends on the number of aromatic rings and functional groups present. The formation of halogenated and nitrated derivatives in contaminated water presents a challenge for using AOPs in real systems, but AOPs show promise in the removal of AHs from different environmental matrices.

Activated persulfate and peroxymonosulfate based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for antibiotics degradation-A review

Zhila Honarmandrad et al.

Summary: Sulfate radical advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) have been successfully utilized for the degradation of antibiotics in water and wastewater treatment. This review discusses the mechanisms and applications of SR-AOPs in antibiotics degradation. The progress in this field, including the most promising developments and remaining challenges, is highlighted. The most susceptible and persistent oxidation groups of pharmaceuticals are summarized, and the highest effectiveness is reported for degradation of pharmaceuticals at ppb level. A scavenging effect is observed when the oxidant dose is 0.7 mM for the persulfate (PS) and 2 mM for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Future development requires simple persulfate activation systems for real matrix treatment.

Sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes for agro-industrial effluents treatment: A comparative review with Fenton's peroxidation

Eva Domingues et al.

Summary: Agro-industrial wastewater management is becoming increasingly important as environmental regulations become stricter worldwide. These wastewaters are known for high organic pollutant content, which adversely affects water bodies. Industries are seeking efficient, user-friendly, and affordable treatment processes. Sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (S-AOPs) are emerging as suitable alternatives for treating agro-industrial effluents. This review discusses the major findings regarding the application of this technology for real agro-industrial wastewater treatment, comparing it with Fenton's process, which is widely studied and highly efficient in treating agro-industrial effluents. Promising results have been achieved in existing studies, but there is still a lack of research in this area and using this technique.
