Assessing microplastic exposure of the Critically Endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) on a remote oceanic island

Ashlie J. McIvor et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a common marine pollutant that are highly available to marine predators. This study investigates microplastic exposure in Mediterranean monk seals from the Madeira archipelago and finds that the prevalence of microplastics in their scat samples is higher than in other pinniped species. Results suggest that the coastal food-web in the Madeira archipelago has relatively high levels of microplastic pollution, increasing the risk of microplastic consumption for higher-trophic level organisms.

Microplastics and co-pollutant with ciprofloxacin affect interactions between free-floating macrophytes

Hongzhi Mao et al.

Summary: Microplastic and antibiotic contamination pose a growing environmental problem in aquatic systems, particularly regarding their impact on freshwater vascular plants. This study investigated the effects of polyethylene microplastics and their co-pollutants with ciprofloxacin on the growth and physiological characteristics of Spirodela polyrhiza and Lemna minor, and their interactions. Results showed that microplastics had species-specific effects on photosynthetic pigments, malondialdehyde, catalase, and soluble sugar contents, while ciprofloxacin significantly affected the growth and physiological traits of the test macrophytes. Microplastics also influenced the relative yield and competitiveness of the two macrophytes, potentially affecting macrophyte population dynamics, community structure, and ecosystem functioning.

Coupled effects of microplastics and heavy metals on plants: Uptake, bioaccumulation, and environmental health perspectives

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution has significant ecological and environmental concerns due to its widespread production and discharge in natural ecosystems. This article focuses on the translocation of microplastics from soil to plants and their interaction with heavy metals. Microplastic exposure affects various aspects of plant growth and can indirectly impact plant growth through changes in soil nutrient content and microbial community structure. Additionally, microplastics can absorb heavy metals and increase their toxicity in plants. However, more research is needed to fully understand the combined effects of heavy metals and microplastics on plant bioaccumulation. This work highlights the importance of considering the combined effects of heavy metals and microplastics on plant and human health.

The amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis as a promising model in ecotoxicology

Amanda dos Santos et al.

Summary: Near-shore marine/estuarine environments are important in the marine ecosystem, but are vulnerable to chemical pollution. The lack of model organisms with sufficient ecotoxicological information limits the ability to investigate pollution effects, especially in tropical regions. However, the circumtropical marine amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis has emerged as an important model organism in ecotoxicology. It can be easily cultured in the laboratory, and standardized ecotoxicity protocols have been developed. Studies have been conducted on the effects of various toxicants, genotoxicity, gene expression, and regeneration. Methods for determining internal concentrations of metals and organic substances have been successfully developed. Research on reproduction, growth, immune responses, and DNA damage is ongoing. P. hawaiensis has a similar sensitivity to other amphipods, and its feasibility for laboratory culture, recent ecotoxicity evaluation protocols, and expanding knowledge on its biology make it an attractive model organism and tool for risk assessment in tropical environments.

The Response of Duckweed Lemna minor to Microplastics and Its Potential Use as a Bioindicator of Microplastic Pollution

Ula Rozman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the possibility of using an aquatic macrophyte as a bioindicator of microplastic pollution in freshwaters. The results showed that certain microplastics had a significant impact on the growth and root length of the aquatic macrophyte, while natural particles and fibers had no significant effect. Polyethylene microbeads exhibited higher adhesion to the aquatic macrophyte compared to other microplastics and natural particles, indicating the potential use of the macrophyte as an important monitoring tool for microplastic pollution in freshwaters.

Summary: The concentration of microplastics in terrestrial environments can vary by up to eight orders of magnitude, with higher concentrations in inland locations such as glaciers and urban stormwater. Studies suggest that microplastic concentrations are lower in water bodies at terrestrial boundaries like estuaries. Fibers are preferentially transported to coastal sediments over inland water bodies, indicating potential differences in microplastic distribution patterns.
