The Current State and Future Prospects of Water and Sanitation Services in East Africa: The Case of Rwanda

Gratien Twagirayezu et al.

Summary: Water and sanitation services are crucial for sustainable development and have a wide range of benefits. This review paper examines the water and sanitation services in Rwanda through comparing the actual performance in different communities. The findings show that a large majority of the population in Rwanda has access to improved water and sanitation services, indicating an improvement in their living conditions. However, settlement style and financial concerns remain significant obstacles to achieving comprehensive coverage. The study suggests that the government should address these barriers and provide sustainable solutions to ensure continued progress in water and sanitation services.

Financiers' perceptions of risk in relation to large hydropower projects

Judith Plummer Braeckman et al.

Summary: More renewable electricity generation capacity is needed in lower income and lower-middle income countries (LICs and L-MICs) to support sustainable development goals and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Large hydropower has the potential to play a crucial role in a future electricity mix dominated by intermittent renewables, but concerns over social and environmental risks have hindered private sector investment in such projects. This paper introduces a conceptual analytical framework that can assist governments, developers, lenders, and investors in mitigating risks and securing sustainable finance for large hydropower projects in LICs and L-MICs.
